(Ray) --__--__-- Message: 1 From: Julian Gilmour To: Escrima Digest Date: Thu, 16 Jul 2009 22:43:23 +0000 Subject: [Eskrima] European weapons laws Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Hi all Someone (sorry, can't remember who, but no disrespect) asked about European weapons laws as Google was not specific enough, and I would say that it, at least in the UK, and depending on the weapon, it is not black and white at all. In the UK, unlicensed firearms (which, outside of law enforcement and the military is pretty much all of them) could easily get someone into a lot of trouble. If I was broken into, and had a firearm but didn't shoot someone, I could still potentially be sent down, because the law sees possession of an illegal firearm as a major infraction. I am not saying I agree or disagree with this, I am simply reporting it. As I said a few posts ago, if I lived in the states, I would certainly consider firearms (but presumably even this is state-specific). - As for knives, we have a system which I don't necessarily disagree with. Here are a few scenarios: - If a 17 year-old kid, hanging around a bus stop at midnight, with a load of his mates, a bad attitude and some methamphetamine in his system, and more in his pockets, carries a knife, he is going to struggle to explain carrying it to a policeman, and may find himself to be 'in trouble with the law' for the weapon, even more than the chemicals. - If I am on my way to the gym, with wooden or aluminium training knives, a blunt metal barong, focus mits and boxing gloves, AND A GOOD ATTITUDE WITH THE POLICEMAN, I expect to be absolutely fine. - Equally, someone who is camping or fishing with a fairly big knife, or a job which requires such tools, should also be absolutely fine with LEOs. I believe this is considered a 'legitimate' reason. - If you have sticks on you, you should be fine if you use the advice someone (sorry, can't remember who, but thanks) quoted on the list years ago "They are sticks for practising the Filipino martial arts officer. They save me having to carry real swords around.) FYI - Apparently they should also be concealed and not sticking out of your bag, for the world to see. 'Common sense' differs depending on where you live, and the laws and civil rights you are used to. Much of the above makes a lot of sense to me, but may not to many list members. A long time ago, while discussing firearms, and citing a real-world example, someone said on list that the right to bear arms should not be ignored in the US, even if someone has a mental illness. Good luck with trying to persuade me that a diagnosed paranoid schizophrenic should be allowed a machine gun out in society. Just a thought. Like I say, I am not condoning the British method, I am only reporting it. I am not suggesting that the US disarm themselves/yourselves, that would be equally inappropriate. I do however, plan on trying to stay out of prison, so I can continue to be ready to defend my family. If the above isn't entirely coherent, sorry, but it's very late and I've had a few beers. Beer should also be limited to adults and only used and carried in the right context :) Strike from the void Julian _________________________________________________________________ Get the best of MSN on your mobile http://clk.atdmt.com/UKM/go/147991039/direct/01/ --__--__-- Message: 2 From: "sifujames@juno.com" Date: Fri, 17 Jul 2009 04:43:47 GMT To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Subject: [Eskrima] Eskrima and canibus Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Living here in California we have medical marijuana to treat a whole spectrum of things wat is the history if any in the Hilot healing arts? ____________________________________________________________ Anti Virus Tools Free Spyware & Virus Scan.
