Re: Training in PI vs the West (jhfischer@fuse.net) --__--__-- Message: 1 Date: Tue, 21 Jul 2009 04:50:13 -0400 (EDT) From: Federico Malibago To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Subject: [Eskrima] Training in PI vs the West Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Figured Id stir the pot once again. I've had a number of experiences training in FMA both in the US and PI, experienced different styles, and views towards training, though my start down this path of FMA training was started here in the US. For a long time I read posts from players in PI, talking about how it was different there than the US, and thought to myself well maybe for some schools, but we're different. We work hard, we keep true to the spirit so to speak. And well lo and behold, going to PI and getting the chance to experience FMA there, and well it was different. Perhaps its the water, the balut, or the rice, but well players in PI just seemed to approach and do the art differently than those with only US training. For me it was a big change in paradigm over what I was used to with the idea of "martial arts training", and was wondering how training compared for others who have trained both in PI and in the West? Arnis Championships re-scheduled for April 2010 The Arnis Alliance Champioships that where to be held at this years Martial Games has been re-schedualed to be held in April 2010 and is now open to competitors from around the world as this will be the International Arnis Alliance Championships, below is a breif message recieved by us from the organisers of the Martial Games. Fantastic news! As the organisers of the Martial games, we are pleased to announce a brand new and exciting development within the games! We have recently signed with a major broadcast production, with an interest in televising both the Martial games and the Martial Arts Festival UK, which is set to be held early next year! As a company, we feel that this is a great opportunity and one that we cannot ignore. Our main goals have always been to showcase the Martial Arts industry and talent with-in the UK. With this in mind and the contractual agreements set out by the production company, we have made the mutual agreement to postpone the independent Martial Games and incorporate it into the national Martial Arts Festival in April 2010. The newly acquired production process allows us to offer competitors the opportunity to register now and pay in December 2009. This is to ensure that all release forms and documentation laid out by the production team is signed and duly processed in time for the event. NB: registrations will continue to be accepted (with payment) up to February 2010. However, please be aware that due to the overwhelming response and the nature of this tournament, that entry for applications received after December 2009 will not be guaranteed. --__--__-- Message: 3 Date: Tue, 21 Jul 2009 15:19:53 -0400 From: To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Subject: Re: [Eskrima] Training in PI vs the West Cc: Federico Malibago Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net -Federico, Why I have only been there once ,I would say it was more intense than here in the US.Maybe because it was the kind of training venue that I signed up for or maybe it was the time change and diet that I wasn’t use to,or maybe it was because the training never stopped .D.T.S. has a strong Military influence and is presented in that format and structure. So it was early to bed early to rise and hiking into the mountainous areas before the training even started. Once we got there ,there were different kinds of terrains to train in and on ,like mountain stream environments and uneven terrain .The floor of the surrounding rainforests are completely different to train on that a tile floor.Im not saying that it couldn’t be duplicated in the US,But you definitely couldn’t duplicate the richness of the culture and the sounds and smells of PI.
