These are all different countries with very different historial and cultural contexts. I seriously doubt that any language translates word for word and meaning for meaning, to another language. Therefore we can not and should not expect a martial art with it's lingustic and cultural structures to translate completely into another country. Within the USA alone there are numerous subcultural communities just beneath the larger general cultural context that most of us can identify as "being American". Yet there is very clearly a hyphonated component within the American lifestyle that seperates people who are seen very clearly as "American" outside of the boarders of the USA. Within these subcultural communities the FMA, Karate, Kung Fu and other martial arts can and do take on slightly different, yet clearly identifiable characteristics. There would very likely be a difference in FMA training between people raised and trained in the Philippines and their cultural counterparts the Filipino-Americans raised and trained in the USA. To expect that we would not see differences between those raised and trained in the Philippines and Anglo-Americans, German-Americans, Irish-Americans, African-Americans, Mexican-Americans and the like is, to me unreasonable. As I see the matter, it is not a cases of which set of training regimes is best, more realistic or even "correct", it is a matter of observing if the training fits the needs of the people within their particular cultural/subcultural contexts. Some people want and thrive in a training situation that stresses the particular cultural ideas of the arts country of origin. Other people need an art that is dedicated to self defense and personal protection applications. Neither option is the only correct way to train and a blending the two, thus opening a third option is entirely reasonable. If the FMA are anything, they are practical and flexible. One can learn weapons theory and applicatons as well as empty hand skills. I've enjoyed learning the FMA is the Philippines, the USA and England. The basic structures were the same in all three countries but emphasis shifted as the cultural context changed not only from country to country, but also from region to region with the USA. As i have read over the various posts on this topic for the past couple of months I have smiled, frowned, laughed, groaned and just simply shook my head. But in the end the posts really reflected the reality of the training and the different cultural contexts/experiences that the writers embraced. So rather than pick on one or two writers to support or disagree with my decesion is to simply mention the cutural aspects of the people studying the art, then suggest that if one moves to another area or place to live they will have to adapt to the new enviroment. The USFMAF in Brotherhood with Eskrimadors Accademy had two tournaments together side by side. There everybody was at the Long Beach International with two FMA tournaments being held as part of giant martial arts event in world class facility-the Long Beach Convention Center. With multiple masters doing seminar upstairs on Saturday and Sunday while tournaments were happening downstairs. In one ring was the USFMAF with all seven of its divisions and in the next ring was Eskrimadors Accademy with WEKAF and its single and double stick divisions. The action was great, fights could fight either circuit or both. The WEKAF style fighting happen on Saturday only with the USFMAF happening on Saturday and Sunday. There were some great fights that happened that I watched as well as coached my fighters from our club, I never seen more near knock outs and with padded weapons no less!!!! Live stick was just fierce with some hard core battling happing. The Cultural Challenge was really something with strikes from padded weapons so had that they broke shields made of wood and the fancy foam-rubber types too. I saw some non FMA helmets crack and face masked dented in. It really pays to have good equipment. Sundays afternoon wrapped up with great action happening with knife with kick and punch. There were all kinds of venders (FMA included) there with all kinds of Martial Arts equipment. While all of this action was happening, the House of Champions in Van Nuys was hosting the 90th birthday party and seminar for SGM Cacoy Canete, and on Saturday was FCS's Seminar and tournament at the park in Eagle Rock. Because so much was happening many groups sent people to as many as they could . I felt like kid in candy store with so much FMA happening at once. I am glad I was at Long Beach were history was being made. Our group all wished we could be with the others too at the same time. It was not the weekend to stay home but to get out play. Provincial Jail Administration Officer-in-Charge Dionisio Q. Silva, Jr. said prison guards recently attended a three-day Team Building Seminar conducted by University of St. La Salle staff under Dr. Rhobee Ramos. Participants were trained on "Arnis" in four batches, and will soon undergo their annual Gun Handling Proficiency Training and Records Firing, scheduled this August. Silva also disclosed that they have embarked on additional skills development program for inmates in preparation for their eventual reintegration into the mainstream of society. Silva added that the inmates recently attended an Orientation Seminar on Balut-Making and Salted-Egg Making conducted by personnel from the Technology and Livelihood Development Center (TLDC), followed by a Hollow-Blocks Making Seminar. The machines for hollow blocks making and other materials were provided by the Provincial Government under Gov. Isidro P. Zayco. "Hollow blocks making is given emphasis with the end in view of supplying the construction materials to projects undertaken by the Provincial Government, particularly the ongoing construction of the Integrated Correctional and Agricultural Training Center (that includes a new Provincial Jail building) in Barangay Tabunan, Bago City," the OIC- Provincial Jail Administrator said In addition to making lanterns during the Yuletide Season, the administration also plans to train inmates on other skills like furniture-making, pandan and nito- weaving, to make them busy while awaiting disposition of their cases, Silva said, adding that untoward incidents involving these inmates could be minimized if they are engaged in livelihood activities.
