Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Do do striking practice, if so what kind? Do you just swing in the air? Do you hit a partners stick, or perhaps a gloved hand? Do you hit punching bags? Do you hit tires (stationary vs swing)? Do you hit trees? Do you use varying weights of sticks? What do you do to build a stronger strike? Or do you just simply not care about striking practice, and emphasize the whole defense is more important train of thought? As for me, I note that boxers, muay thai fighters, even baseball players, all activities whose ultimate goal is to hit something will all devote a whole lot of time hitting somethin. I dont see why someone who does the Filipino arts should be any different. I dont want to hope my strike is strong, I want to know my strike is strong. So lots and lots of tire hitting, rinse wash repeat. Now, for those who say, well your examples are all sports examples, well how about soldiers? They sure practice shootin their guns a whole lot, and well boxers punch, kickboxers kick, a soldier who is a rifleman shoots, so as someone who does the Filipino arts, shouldnt we hit? The Philippines, which last held the overall title in the early 1990’s, is keen on regaining its supremacy in its own form of martial art when they compete in the World Championship in Guadalajara, Mexico next year. The USA has outclassed the Filipinos in their own martial art form as the Americans took the overall titles in the last four world championships. Wekaf Vice President Gerald Canete said the upcoming event is one way of getting to that goal. “It is an avenue for us to select world-class Cebuano fighters who will give the Philippines back the title.” “This tournament is designed for us to discover new talents and fighters. As soon as they are known, these fighters will be pooled and trained. We will sift through them to get the best bets for the world championship,” Gerald said in a press conference at YO.U at the Parkmall last Monday. Cañete added that they hope to discover passionate athletes, who want bring that most sought after title back to country. That is why they are widening their search and are opening the tournament to all clubs to boost the Philippines’ chances of winning the overall title. “We also expect competitors from neighboring islands to give the Cebuanos a stiff challenge,” said Cañete. The tournament is backed by The Greater Cebu Sports Organizing Committee of sportsman Jonathan Guardo, Gervince, Xkrim and Parkmall. It will start at 1 p.m. after a short opening ceremony. The sayaw or forms event will open the competition, followed by the sparring event. The winners of the tournament will be given slots to the training --__--__-- _______________________________________________ Eskrima mailing list Eskrima@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/eskrima Subscribe or Unsubscribe: http://eskrima-fma.net Old digest issues @ ftp://ftp.martialartsresource.com/pub/eskrima Copyright 1994-2009: Ray Terry, MartialArtsResource.com, Sudlud.com Standard disclaimers apply.
