Date: Wed, 19 Aug 2009 16:03:35 -0700 Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Yep. Lots and lots of hitting tires, heavy bags (w/sticks), and occasionally 'things' that hit back. Also videotape these hitting workouts. Slow down the video and critique the form. Look for energy leaks, good use of core strength, not telegraphing, not overhitting so as to not be able to recover when, not if, you miss the target. I assume this relates purely to striking with a closed fist to avoid power leaks, however, I know of at least two well-regarded combatives teachers (as in "combatives is something you do *to* someone, martial art is something you do *with* someone) who deplore striking with the knuckles of a closed fist. 2) I have seen fighters demolish a heavy bag yet in the ring cannot hurt a fly. What is missing? Is it the specificity of hitting people? There are street thugs with proven knock out punches who never had formal training in their life. Is it that they learned on the live target? FWIW I liked to train on the BOB - the way the punches had to be delivered were far more realistic than hitting a bag and IMHO required different attributes. 3) Finally, the analogy with shooting is sligthly flawed: Studies have shown that marksmanship is learned faster if *dry* firing practice exceeds live firing practice by a considerable margin. Having said that at some point you gotta pop off a live one or two... Times: 1100 - 1330 & 1400 - 1630 both days (half hour lunch break only). The Leys is an excellent venue with good parking and other facilities, such as showers, etc. It is also within 10-15 minutes walk from Cambridge City centre for anyone who would like to see the sights after the seminar is over. About RICK FAYE: Rick Faye is the owner and head instructor of the Minnesota Kali Group (MKG), USA, which he founded in 1982. He has been teaching and training in the martial arts for many years, and he is one of only five Senior Full Instructors in both Jun Fan Martial Arts/Jeet Kune Do (JKD) Concepts and in the Filipino Martial Arts under Guro Dan Inosanto in the world, and the only one outside of the state of California. In addition: Rick holds a fifth level instructorship under Guro Inosanto in Silat (Maphilindo Martial Arts); he is a Full Instructor in Muay Thai/Thai Boxing under Ajarn Chai Sirisute (and is one of only 6 regional directors in the country for the Thai Boxing Association); an Instructor under Sensei Erik Paulson in Combat Submission Wrestling (CSW), and he holds instructorships from Paul Vunak, and the late Sifu Larry Hartsell. Rick Faye has an impressive reputation for seminars on the martial arts, as well as self-defense and law enforcement topics. He is much in demand for seminars locally, nationally and internationally. Seminars with Rick are always inspirational and great fun. His devotion to the arts, and attention to detail, will ensure that everyone (no matter what their current level) will leave the seminar with a greater knowledge and understanding of (and ability in) the martial arts generally. Greetings, all... About all we've done to work on full contact with sticks is to use the big standup martial arts bags (like the Wavemaster, etc.) or older hanging bags. You can go pretty hard with them without tearing them up too bad... But still, that hard impact is just like striking empty hand as far as how it feels to the body. Probably the closest we can go without going to a Gathering Of The Pack... :) - Bert Edens --__--__-- _______________________________________________ Eskrima mailing list Eskrima@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/eskrima Subscribe or Unsubscribe: http://eskrima-fma.net Old digest issues @ ftp://ftp.martialartsresource.com/pub/eskrima Copyright 1994-2009: Ray Terry, MartialArtsResource.com, Sudlud.com Standard disclaimers apply.
