Metro Manila aka the NCR: National Capital Region is made up of a number of cities. For most martial arts shopping you can limit your travels to two areas: Manila and San Juan/Ortigas. If you're gonna be huffing on your own I recommend picking up a local map or city map book. Depending on your interest, there are a couple of side trips that are worth making as well. The first stop is in Quiapo, Manila. There are a few place to get pre & custom made gear like stick bags, uniforms, WEKAF sparing gear, etc also Ernesto Presas has his head quarters there with items for sale. Some folks still know how to make variations of the Edgar Sulites forarm and hand guards. In my experience these are some of the best training tools to pick up. There are also a bunch of military supply stores that carry sets of rattan sticks, as well as kamagong and bahi sticks. They also carry the now standard Philippine padded stick. Which is a nylon cover over a foam covered thin rattan stick. You can also find Chinese made balisongs and sometimes local made knives. If you walk over to the streets that sell construction tools you can find Luzon style bolo's. These are nice since the Luzon style is full tang. There are also street vendors that specialize in Philippine herbal concoctions for hilot, folks who sell anting-anting, and plenty of folks selling DVD's. If you're interested in MMA take the time to find the folks that specialize just in Ultimate Fighting Championship videos and there like. The nice thing about Quiapo shopping is that all of the above is in walking distance of each other. Parking & traffic are rough but there is plenty of public transit including busses, jeepneys, and taxi cabs. Note: some of the best pick pockets work in this area and as a non-Asian Westerner you will stick out like a sore thumb and draw lots of friendly attention. You should be safe but people will still look at you as meal ticket in this area. Your looks will also increase price tags so bring a guide for best prices. The San Juan - Ortigas trip takes several stops & are better done with a driver or be ready to make several taxi trips. K1 - This is best MMA store I have found. A good place to pick up cheap quality boxing and MMA gloves. They have a few FMA items but cost more than Quiapo. It's about 25 meters north of Santolan Street on Ortigas Ave. They have Martial Art DVD's & books but they all focus on MMA. Green Hills - Sadly the Squadron Shop is gone - this was the mecca of martial arts shopping in years gone by. The once cheap Virra Mall has gone upscale. Green Hills is still a place to pick up clothing, bags (non-fma related), and shoes. There are also people selling DVD's but are pricier than Quiapo. There is a store that specializes in crafts from Mindanao including clothes, gongs, and weapons. The prices are not cheap though - decent replicas cost from Php 6,000 to 9,000 and actual antique blades range in the Php 25,000 + range. They have nice barong, kriss, pira, and kampilan. Tiendasitas - This is a covered outdoor mall on C-5 a main high way. Upscale but still cheap to anyone earning dollars or euros. Its a great place to pick up food pasalubong/gifts and find all kinds of regional cuisine under one roof. They also have an antique area that sells the real stuff as well as replicas. They have stores that also specialize in items from Mindanao like the place in Green Hills with the addition of carrying the old style Moro cannons. Bamboo & Rattan supply store on Aurora Ave - also I think this is already in Manila. It is near the LRT Pureza station. This is a place to get the raw rattan in bulk in the size you want then you can look up ways to customize and treat it to your hearts delight. Other special items: If you know folks with Pekiti Tirsia connections, a number of the Philippine Force Recon Marines makes training weapons for extra cash. They make wonderful training versions of ginuntings, combat knifes, and karambits. The same folks would also know how to order the custom hand made ginuntings that are actually used by the Philippine Force Recon Marines for combat missions. Filipiniana Books - for those wanting to know more about Philippine prehistory, colonial times, etc. I recommend checking out these sections of most any local National Book Store, Fully Booked, or Powerbooks. If you want the best selection check out their Flagship stores: Quezon Ave in QC for National Bookstore, Powerplant Mall for Powerbooks in Makati, and High Street, Fort Bonifacio in Taguig for Fully Booked. Last but not least - give Mr. Alex Co a call or text - write to me directly if you want that information. If you want to find something martial arts related that I have not mentioned - he either has it or can point you in the right direction. IMHO some of the best knowledge still not common in all FMA circles is some of the structural development stuff that is found in TCMA - Traditional Chinese Martial Arts. Mr. Co is your access to the best of this here in the Philippines and he's also been the Ngo Cho instructor of a number of top FMA instructors. If your trip is long enough you can also look into getting custom carved training tools and weapons. I have a friend who is getting a custom made Mook Jong/Wing Chun wodden dummy made out of molave. My favorite training blades have all been custom carvings. Any other feedback from Manila based folks or favorites not mentioned from those who have travelled through here? Open emails faster.
