Are we here to disparage each others countries now?" There is change and then there is change. I do not know about disparaging. I believe the debate started on waivers and then came the statement by Mr. Batts about people who in his opinion are nice or otherwise depending on their attitude to trespassers. Another participant pointed the marked difference in such attitudes in UK and USA. I think the two elements of the thread have in common the concept of personal responsibility which seem to differ markedly in the two countries, a difference that IMHO was less obvious 20+ years ago. I suspect that in most coutries this side of the Atlantic a drug user injured in the process of a criminal act (tresspass) would be held responsible rather than the owner of the property. In fact one does not have to cross the Atlantic to find common sense prevailing: http://zpravy.idnes.cz/nastrazena-kuse-muze-byt-nutnou-sebeobranou-urcil-nejvyssi-soud-py8-/krimi.asp?c=A090930_160900_krimi_jba I hope Google is good to you translating this. I would certainly draw the line at anything fatal though… and what if a policeman sees someone breaking into an upstairs window and decides to climb in the downstairs window to catch him? ‘We find the defendant guilty, your honour.’ 2 - Nil illegitimi carborundum, Pat – Don’t let the b@stards grind you down. 3 - Two days, without sleep, then still wanting to walk all the way to Cambridge from London, you say! Two questions: Firstly, did he make you sign a waiver? And secondly… Can you get any more? ‘We sleep safely in our beds because rough men stand ready in the night to visit violence upon those who would harm us.’ - George Orwell. This was three weeks ago. I didnt sleep for days, not out of concern for my predicament, but for the fact that someone 'in my care' was in this state. He's now getting back to full health. Wouldn't wish it on any instructor to go through that. The coffee cup with 'This contains Hot Coffee" or 'There may be nuts in this bag of Peanuts' was not a UK invention. Employed in the offshore oil industry I have witnessed a lot of this. I agree wholeheartedly that personnal responsibility should be the priority, but how we get there is for other forums. But we can all no doubt agree that there are an awful lot of people looking for an easy get rich quick scheme. The waivers I see being used at seminars for certain JKD instructors are a result of the actions of a few idiots probably miffed at the fact that an Instructor didnt lick their backside for them. Whilst the waiver doesnt necessarily stand up in court it does give some the opportunity of recognising that risk may be involved.
