Woo hoo. Well, I can say from experience that there's typically a lot of quality control in the ITF - at least, from what I've seen. IMHO if you can find an orgainzation with good quality control, hang on to it with both hands! - -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dave Steffen Wave after wave will flow with the tide Dept. of Physics And bury the world as it does Colorado State University Tide after tide will flow and recede steffend@lamar.colostate.edu Leaving life to go on as it was... - Peart / RUSH "The reason that our people suffer in this way.... is that our ancestors failed to rule wisely". -General Choi, Hong Hi ------------------------------ From: Date: Wed, 30 Dec 1998 23:55:47 EST Subject: the_dojang: Re: successive kick defense jane wrote: One thing I'm not so good at and would like any advice on, is what to do with opponents who go after you with three or more strikes, one right after another. (Not whining - - - I was pleased with how I did in the tournament, and all of us competitors remain friends)!>> jane, IMHO, i would suggest going in for the punch-punch-punch. if you back away, she's just got more room to do the successive kicking. if you cant block them, then get agressive with an offense. i do the same thing as you....i move in close with those long legged folks. :). i'm a very short 5'1" so everyone's got long legs as far as i'm concerned. additionally, and you might want to take care with this suggestion, you could throw a spinning hook or even an axe to the head. she'll realize that if youre gonna kick at her noggin everytime she goes in for the triple kick, she needs to get her butt outta there more quickly. Beleive it or not I see many students only step straight back, when they could side step and open the oppenent up right away. I would be curious myself to find out what kinds of drills anyone here practices to prevent the student from backing themselves into a corner/wall. Now I can't give you that wholehearted agreement because I have learned first hand that by being a major pain in the rear, it is possible to make changes and to make the organization do what you want it to do. First you have to ignore everyone who tells you that "there is nothing you can do, they are all crooks." Second you have to be willing to stick your neck out - and annoy the upper echelons. And third and harder than any of these - you have to be willing to back your words and do what is right, and fight for what you want. And if you truly believe the athletes are the most important people in this group, anyone can make an impact - Even a female in a male dominated sport. Even a 4th dan in a world of GRANDMASTERS. You just have to believe what you teach - Preserving and Indomitable Spirit and Conviction of Ultimate Victory. Respectfully, Ronda J. I do not mean this negatively - but a lot of people do this - you do two kicks, I do two kicks - or worse yet, one technique, one technique. I use counters - depending on what they are throwing - for example - for most kicks (probably because it is my best kick) as they throw a round house or a push kick, I just zap out a back thrust. Sometimes I sidestep and roundhouse. Why do you have to wait until your opponent is finished? Answer, you don't, stop them in their tracks. ------------------------------ From: Date: Fri, 1 Jan 1999 12:07:48 -0800 (PST) Subject: the_dojang: . ------------------------------ End of The_Dojang-Digest V6 #1 ****************************** Support the USTU by joining today!
