If TKD plans to continue allowing full contact sparring to the head for elite, adult competitors then upgraded protective equipment should be mandated. <<< This would be an example of "something good borne out of a tragedy." I will leave the body of Mr. Herricks post to the rest of the crowd, but this I feel comfortable adressing. I never, ever teach my students full contact sparring because of the danger involved, and the inadequate equipment provided to protect the sparring partners from harm. The NFL (American Football) has been considering upgraded protective head equipment for some time, but has not acted yet either. I fail to understand the lack of courage on the part of the NFL Officers to step in and demand these changes. I come from a standpoint where if a change would reduce one (just one!!!!!) injury in the long run, without increasing any other risks, then the change is worth every penny sppent, and every competitor complaining about it's "inconvinence." I agree with that statement Mr. Herrick, and I hope and pray something (ANYTHING) good comes from this occurance. This may be a good time for us all to critically examine the risks involved in our sparring, and ways to reduce those risks. Not sure we need to know all the exact details. I know that I don't really care to. What would you teach, especially given that 99.99999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999% of the time there will not be a problem? > In Sport TKD there is no emphasis on > teaching self discipline - Control; Self Improvement - Humility, and Self Confidence - Respect for yourself and others. And what makes you claim that? I've seen otherwise in every situation that I've been involved with. > In general, we as BBs and specifically our Masters and Grand Masters are > responsible for this tragedy. Sorry, but that just doesn't follow. Accidents happen. S*^t happens. A handful of high school football players die every few years during practice or a game. Are all first string football players and their coaches then responsible for those tragedies? Of course not... Well, perhaps details might help out a little here. From what little I've heard, equipment limitations were not a problem here so that is not a concern.
