This is pretty much tongue in cheek - but with enough truth...... I discovered about 2nd dan that it is hard for a higher ranking female to get a date. Even harder at 3rd dan and impossible at 4th dan. You see there are 3 kinds of men: Non-martial artists Lower ranks Equal or higher ranks Non-martial artists - You don't tell him you are a black belt - but at dinner one nite, some mommy comes by and says "Aren't you that referee at ..... My son still talks about...." Or you get a phone call and suddenly you are talking NGB's, USOC, USTU, dobok, and he is left out - so you confess. Week 1: He's impressed. You really worked hard. Week 2: He took it in college and all of their instructors took from Bruce Lee. Week 3: It becomes a little dicier - the guys at the office start to harass him about not being able to cheat on you. Start looking for bruises, and accuse him of being tamed. Ego kicks in. Week 4: You are a black belt - but he can take you. You can take those guys in class, but ..... Week 5 - end: "what do you mean you have a tournament this weekend - I have my kids and I thought we'd do something together." [Translation - you'd baby-sit] Lower ranks - same song, takes a little longer. He gets harassed at school and office. Equal or Higher ranks: Smaller group, (mostly married) you are great buddies and you don't want to ruin the relationships, as if you do, you still have to face him at all the tournaments and functions. I even met the guy I was dating who got me into TKD in the first place (20+ years ago). He is still a 1st dan. He and my former instructors are pissed I outrank them all. He is impressed with my dedication, impressed with my accomplishments, but can't I throw it all away....... And before you feel too sorry for me - there's a 5th dan or two out there ..... but at least one of them wants me to teach his 4 year old class argghhhhhhhh :) R. J. I'm a 40-something practitioner, and as a desk-jockey, my shoulders tend to fold in during free sparring when I strike. Are there any recommended weight exercises to assist in pulling them back? I'm working on stretching them a little looser (corner pushups, etc.). I could see an issue being taken after-the-fact in the definition of what constitutes an emergency situation or life threatening situation. Bet that's as varied as individuals themselves and when you couple that with the excitement of the moment mass confusion dominates. I had this happen to me once in TKD and once while playing basketball. Nobody seemed to know what to do to help so I laid there with people starring down at me. I've seen this injury vary on a continuum of 1 to 10 with ten being very severe including squishing together your spinal cords and having your pelvic bone moved out of place. Usually the treatment after the injury occurs is to seek physical therapy. I am concerned about when it actually happens. If you fall hard and just right you literally can have your breath removed. Thanks. I would like to know what the medical time outs are amongst the various organizations for injuries such as this. I frequently saw the competitors resume the match even when they weren't ready just because they were not aware that they could have a full minute or call an MD or their coach to their side or just time to regain their composure. However a referee is certainly within > bounds to say something. I think that if the kids are your own students, you would have every right to sit them down and explain to them that they were misbehaving. If they are acting in a manner that reflects badly upon their teacher, then something needs to change. Respect is a foundation in the MA and if kids are only showing respect when they have to, then it seems like they still have a little more to learn about the concept. James ------------------------------ From: "Jamaica Power" Date: Thu, 21 Jan 1999 10:30:21 PST Subject: the_dojang: Distractions/Pet Peeves I've heard it said that the little things in life can get to you. This is a semi-serious post about distractions in the martial arts (at least they are to me) at tournaments and in various schools. Now I realize my distractions and things that lightly annoy me probably don't mean a thing to someone else but I thought I'd list a couple anyway. And I realize some are unavoidable so don't take me all too serious unless you have a distraction that really does cause a problem. I'm not trying to slam/flame/embroil anyone here. Some of them bring back some very funny memories for me. I remember years back when women's hairstyles were fluffier and more women began competing. Everybody was pulling their hair into a pony tail and through their head protector and then as they were getting ready to spar they did the bouncy bounce thing. When this trend first started I noticed it was also an effective distraction to their opponent. More than one girl at that time would lose focus and concentration. Really felt good too if you were standing in the wrong place and got whipped in the face with the pony taile. Then there is jewelry. I was always taught never ever never to wear jewelry. Then I began noticing an increase at tournaments and in the schools where people would wear gold necklaces (men and women), gold hoop earing, tons of makeup, etc. I was always taught it was a safety issue not to wear rings, necklaces and hoop earings. Parents and coaches screaming (literally screaming) and pushing and shoving when there child is competing. Wished I had earplugs sometimes. Yellow (but really white) uniforms and especially cool when they are wrinkled on top of that. High water pants... and on.... This is what most martial artists that I talk to say. However, in my experience this may not be the case. Many martial arts schools and clubs teach the concept of Ki/Qi/Chi but not the same way or even a similar definition. The common concept of pushing against a wall is brought up many times. That a wall exhibits no energy yet the action of pushing against it is returned. However, from Newtonian physics, science tells us that the wall exhibits the same, equal reaction that you do but that the mass is different and therefore the acceleration. Therefore, it would take more energy to move the wall the same distance. Also, there are many demonstrations of Ki/Qi/Chi that bend swords, or spears and other pointy stuff by using ones Ki/Qi/Chi. However, I would like to know what people think. * Can Ki/Qi/Chi be generated as a source of energy (or as the energy) without being rooted in some way? Without pushing or pulling against any objects. Obviously, motion, speed and torque arguments can not be used because Newton's laws, Kepler's laws and other laws of physics explain these concepts for most practical purposes. - --- Scott Cink scink@who.net ------------------------------ From: Date: Thu, 21 Jan 1999 14:04:58 -0800 (PST) Subject: the_dojang: . ------------------------------ End of The_Dojang-Digest V6 #39 ******************************* Support the USTU by joining today!
