Women have been getting pregnant for several million years and only in the past few hundred have they started limiting physical activity during pregnancy. If a woman wants to keep with a sport during pregnancy, I don't see any problem with it. She should keep in close contact with her OB/GYN and let the doc know about it. As I understand it, they are fine if they keep the intensity at or below moderate and KEEP HYDRATED and don't overheat. I've even heard of professional athletes running marathons at 9 months. (But I don't think she was quite in professional form.) The workout I get is my release from the frustration I get from my job. If I am working out and my form is not good (sort of like a bad biorythm day), I just continue working. Each workout is a step along the path of self improvement. Sometimes the path is slippery and uphill. That just means you have to try a little harder. I nipped the problem in the bud by disqualifying myself as a judge at tournaments when my VSO or her kids were assigned to compete in my ring. As I mentioned in another post, when they tested, I always made sure to have at least one other judge from outside the school render their actual promotions. I knew and they knew and most other people knew that I would judge them impartially. But by doing it this way, there is absolutely no room for someone to even think about bias on my part. And that's the way I want it. I worked hard for the judging reputation that I've got and I plan to keep it. > > > ------------------------------ > > From: "Sara" > Date: Fri, 22 Jan 1999 14:28:56 PST > Subject: the_dojang: frustration > > Question for experienced martial artists: > > How do you handle the "bad day syndrome," when nothing seems to go right > even though you *know* the techniques or form you are working on? Mary ------------------------------ From: Bernard Eddey Date: Sat, 23 Jan 1999 10:08:30 +0800 Subject: the_dojang: Pregnancy & M.A I fully understand the sentiments expressed on this issue. On the only occasion I sparred with a pregnant training partner I very much kept my distance (who knows, it might be contagious ;-)). It would be very upsetting for all concerned if through a training mishap I was to precipitate a miscarriage. But, as some have indicated, the training and drills could be modified to allow for a minimum amount of risk to mother and baby. If the mother is fit and has been training for some time (IMHO) it is important for her health - mental and physical - (and that of the child) to maintain that fitness. Gone are the days (and quite rightly so) where a pregnancy, under normal circumstances, is treated as an illness - "put your feet up for 9 months, honey". The choice, of course, is the woman's, however I believe it is appropriate that all who may be training with her be informed of the situation and also be allowed to choose - i.e whether or nor they want to engage in sparring, grappling etc. There is also the question of litiation, insurance etc, should something go wrong. I think that my labor was better than most (everything is relative= !) because of my continued training. I was in shape, I knew how to breathe under stress, and I could focus. My husband refused to hold my hand duri= ng the delivery, though, because he was afraid of what I would do to him! := - -) I continued to participate in class until 3 weeks before I gave birth. Mind you, I didn't go looking for romance, but it just happened that way. My husband says he spent months trying to figure out the politically correct way to ask me out on a date, but it took an unfortunate incident at my dojang to seek his help and finally talk to him. At our wedding, over two-thirds of the 200 guests were black belts. In my wedding gown I threw him down on a mat. (My mother-in-law didn't approve...) I put off having children for the sake of my TKD career. I was responsible for a small studio and taught 5 days a week, 5:00-7:45 pm. In addition, from 8:15-10:00 pm on MWF, I secretly trained with another Korean master who was a Korean national champion back in the 80's. My two Korean masters offered me the third degree -- I took my third degree from the master I had been with the longest. I also became a referee, coach, tournament organizer, and occasionally a competitor in order to keep my techniques sharp. I knew that after having earned my third degree, I would have to slow down if I wanted to have children. I was still training when I discovered I was two months pregnant. I slowed down my physical exercise but continued to teach until I was seven and a half months pregnant. In my sixth month, I took a BB maintenance test. I quit doing push-ups after the sixth month. Towards the end of the pregnancy, it was getting pretty difficult to even breathe. My primary concern was the health of the baby, but like any TKD fanatic, I continued to teach sparring and even demonstrate sparring techniques (much to the consternation of some of the older male BBs). The master and his wife wanted me to rest from teaching, but I said no, I wanted to continue to teach white belt children and that I needed to work out. I said that I would even find a health club to work out in. They thought that I said is that I would find another master to train under. In the end, I was kicked out of the dojang for being disrespectful. After the baby was born, I began to have mixed feelings about my TKD training. I began to enjoy the time freed up from TKD. I'm still very much interested in the martial arts, but find it annoying to deal with egos, dojang politics, etc. I still teach, compete, referee, but at a much diminshed pace. After dragging my six week old son to several tournaments, I realized that I was making his life uncomfortable and I was putting my needs and desires first. I was pretty ashamed of what I was doing and now I say no to a lot of TKD requests on my time. My family and I are now a lot happier, but who says that I won't come back in the future?.... ************************************************ Maureen Panganiban M&I Student Services Coordinator Stanford University School of Medicine 299 Campus Drive Stanford, CA 94305-5124 Tel: (650) 725-8541 Fax: (650) 725-6757 URL: http://cmgm.stanford.edu/micro/index.html ------------------------------ From: Date: Fri, 22 Jan 1999 19:15:56 -0800 (PST) Subject: the_dojang: great thread This pregnant thread is a great one.
