Since folks who send items already pay for postage to get to me, perhaps some list members who cannot send items would like to contribute to the shipping from VA to Sarajevo. When I first started learning Taekwondo, my instructor taught me some very important principles before he taught me techniques. 1) learning a martial art should build in you respect and humility 2) the first thing to do is avoid a fight, not start one or provoke one or continue one 3) physical control is important--self-control is more important To put those three together, he gave an example of a young third degree black belt who was skinny and quiet. He was getting pushed around a parking lot by another guy (typical high school harassment garbage that escalated to violence), and as he looked up after being painfully shoved into the side mirror of a car, he *knew* he could place a side kick in the guy's chest and hurt him, even kill him if he wanted; he said it was like "looking up and seeing a bull's-eye painted on the other guy's ribs". Instead, he didn't say a word. He didn't fight verbally or physically, he never threw that kick. He exhibited extreme self-control. That, to me, is winning the fight. If self-control isn't being taught when a student first starts, then what kind of martial artists are the result? Not the kind we have respect for from days past, that's for sure. one_sara@hotmail.com "The Lord is my light and my salvation. Does anybody have a strong preference for one or the other or would the preference depend on the personality and style of the competitor? Has either one been more successful as to your students overall winning records? I did notice a couple of things over the past week and being forced to monitor daytime TV with sick kids about. The first was the episode of Mr. Roger's where he visits a TKD class in his "neighborhood." The second was the TKD 2000 sparring on ESPN2. One of the things I noticed during the sparring was that the victor took his opponent down with a round kick to the head. It seemed to me that the kick was more of a pull down with the back of the ankle...it's hard to tell on a TV. I'm used to sparring where a kick to the head stops a fraction of an inch from the side of the head and contact like that would be frowned upon (to say the least). Again, I'm not used to TKD sparring/rules/regulations. I wonder about this because my little seven year old pi-guy-tummy-hogan-fishy- boy keeps asking about switching over to TKD and, after reading some of the safety concerns I've seen exchanged over the past month or so, I'm wondering how much of me is holding back trying to "protect" my son and how much is my TSD predjudice. (We all know that TKD, like most "state sanctioned" Bulgarian folk choirs were really an effort to take the *real* folk styles and present a homogenized version to the world to prove how forward moving the country can truly be. ; ) Can you tell I used to do Balkan singing in my younger days too?) Apparently at that age the young women pick up the subtle differences in how their coaches and instructors praise and respond to different players more so than young male athletes. Jamacia Wrote: Do you feel these perceptions will change our world of martial arts positively and significantly, or diminish it's respect level? My KCN has had many instances in the past where people have hurt themselves doing activities he was administering. I do believe he has gotten "scared" (as in 'of a lawsuit') and does not vary his classes much anymore. not that it dosent help us; our basics are better than ever and I acknowledge that a great martial artist must first perfect hi/her basics to become that great Martial artist. But one cannot do basics forever, and the advanced classes get bored easily. Not that I'm complaining, but people have to acknowledge that accidents happen (here we go again) and that the whole school cannot suffer because one person had an unfortunate incident, i mean, it's not like they died, they just hurt their ankle. this is an intresting branch to Jamacia's question, what are your thoughts on this?
