I don't expect everybody to agree with or even like my posts. And one thing I enjoy about the forums is the diversity of the opinions. Would be rather boring if we all agreed all the time. I was glad you responded to the post. It gave me an opportunity to respond back and clarify. We all take chances when we post and I've been quite amazed at some of the responses. I like the different perspectives of everybody and I appreciate the opportunity to share my thoughts and experiences with others. We tell students to work hard and do their best and then, instead of testing them when they are ready, we tell them to wait because the rules are it takes x amount of time before you can test for this belt. Sometimes the rule is you can't double promote...even if the student deserves a double promotion. We tell them patches, stripes, etc. aren't important but we act impressed when we see them on other student's uniforms. We do this under the guise of "discipline." Associations have rules. Following the rules is a sign of respect and builds character and discipline. The reality is, these are benchmarks and they deserve a degree of recognition. For some, it's all they live for. But then there are some who only live to buy the newest whatever. There are those who have millions in the bank and live only to their needs. Each person is different and each person is motivated differently. Who are we to judge what motivates another? We can look down our noses at those who see the world differently, but we are still looking down our noses. Symbols, patches, bells, whistles, etc.are important. We are currently reading symbols (the alphabet are really just glyphs). Symbols carry a large amount of weight and make an instant connection. For example, if you see someone wearing a cross around their neck, you know they have a connection to a specific religion. A black belt may mean nothing to some, to others it's a symbol that you have worked to reach a level of achievement. You have learned and (presumably) mastered a number of techniques essential to your style of martial arts. It accords a level of respect because of your work. I will leave you with a story of a symbol that deeply effected my life. About six years ago, vandals broke into a Jewish cemetary and did a large amount of damage by overturning stones, graffitti, etc. My ex's grandparents were buried in that cemetary and I volunteered to go over and make sure they were left undisturbed. When I arrived, the police still had the cemetary cordoned off as a crime scene and I have to give my destination, etc. in order to be allowed in. As I walked in, the damage was absolutely shocking and my first reaction was to burst into tears. I later described what moved me so deeply, a large black schwasticka painted across the marble headstone of a family plot. As I stood there and looked at it, all I could feel was the hatred and anger behind that action. It was just black spray paint on stone, but it was just another symbol. Or was it? The next time you see someone's uniform with patches, colors, symbols, etc. remember, to you it may mean little or nothing, but the person wearing them, they are so much more. Tang Soo! Do you think that makes a difference. >> Hi Ronda, As far as I know, in the past Ohio has always given very nice medals for the state tournaments. This year, they gave lesser medals that were not imported, saved a bundle in cost and duty, and put puzzle mats down for eight rings with the money that was saved. A few people didn't like getting the medium-cost medals, but I didn't hear anyone complain about having the mats. After 7 years of competitions, my son's got a garageful of trophies and about a half dozen that stay in his room. It's pretty much the same with medals -- there are a few that are mounted because they have special meaning, but the rest are in a basket just to keep them all together. Given the choice, we'd rather have medals today, simply because they take up less room. Besides, usually for the same amount of money, you can get a much nicer medal than a trophy. Congratulations on your appointment. Good luck with the tournament. Or maybe I'm just a late >bloomer *grin* >> Syl, I`d like to tell you a story of some students in my club. There is often a situation when several persons sign up at the same day, and they are sometimes close friends. Anyway, you can see them progress in TKD and compare their achievements. Couple of years ago, I had two girls who just joined my school. They trained together and we called them "Small Cat" and "Big Cat", since they shared the same first name - Catherine. Small Cat was a natural athlete. Although she had some problems with particular techniques, she progressed very quickly, and it was`t long when she started to collect her trophies. Big Cat was big and fully Taekwondoproof. She had problems with everything. She was always in the shadow of her friend. But the girl had heart and she was always 100 % into training. It`s nearly five years since they joined. Big Cat is preparing for her black belt test. She was bronze medalist during the Polish Championships and International Polish Championships. She is a regional judge and still continues to progress. Her red belt test was a pleasure to watch. Small Cat... last time I met her in a class was two years ago. And to be honest, I had several such "pairs" in my club. Many people who are naturally gifted often quit training because they never learn to appreciate what they achieved. It is so easy to them to throw a kick, learn a pattern or break a board. Of course, there are also many natural athletes who find their fulfillment in Taekwondo. But I learned that many of the people who do not have any special sport talent show a lot of perserverance and one day, they are among the few that can line up in the first row in a class - the most senior students, with a lot of knowledge gained through years of hard practice... - -- Piotr Bernat dantkd@polbox.com ------------------------------ From: Date: Sun, 14 Feb 1999 03:19:24 -0600 Subject: the_dojang: (Fwd) Third World Hapkido Games From: February 13, 1999 Dear Mr. Sir, I am writing to officially invite you and your team to partic= ipate in the 3rd World Hapkido Games.
