For example when we moved schools our new GM gladly accepted Ben as a blue belt. Since some time lapsed btwn schools his form was rusty to the point of being almost non- existent. he was treated as a "new blue belt" as if he had recently tested for it. Now, BTW, his form is better than it ever was and he can concentrate on learning the things this dojang does that our other didn't. Just a brief point here on starting over. I am NOT a belt happy parent. I don't push for rank or testings. My kid tests when he is told he's ready, its that simple. having said that I believe we must recognize that many families are making a sacrifice to have their kid(s) in the art they practice. Starting over means more in testing fees and tuition and for some can be frustrating. So many "Take my dough" schools exist that it is natural to feel uneasy. Of course a change in style is a different issue altogether and FWIW starting at white belt to me is logical. (Loved the whole post!) Mary ------------------------------ From: burdickd Date: Sun, 28 Feb 1999 08:02:12 -0500 (EST) Subject: the_dojang: TKD-NET & Sumo First, I know that Ray isn't interested in the tkd-net discussion, but I receive enough questions in private email that I'd like to forestall that and make sure that the new readers know what's going on. Ray has written me in the past that he prefers not to have comments about Glenn on dojang_digest since Glenn is not on the list and cannot rebut those comments, but I must say that Glenn is not concerned about such actions on tkd-net and those who are on both groups will certainly hear Glenn's response there. 1. Tkd-net is a useful newsgroup for information on the WTF, its history, Korean recipes, and Korean bars. John is quite right in that Glenn tends to attack those who do not agree with him, and he seems to spend a great deal of time posting. Glenn's comment that "unlike Dojang Digest, no one reads the posts before they are submitted" is completely false however. Unlike in Dojang_Digest, where Ray may stop a post before it is posted but will email the poster to explain, TKD-NET does the same thing without emailing an explanation to the poster. Also, Ray only stops posts that are either insulting or intentional flamebait. Glenn stops any posts that show him a bad light. Could somebody email me and let me know if John's post made it to tkd-net? I'm curious. 2. Glenn's claim that his post on Dojang_Digest was changed is a new one. He got kicked off the list for insulting other members of the list (me and Ray, actually). To my knowledge, his post was never changed, and I believe he would have mentioned it in the multitude of flames he sent me in the year following this event. Glenn definitely shows innae (perseverance) but needs to work on ye ui (courtesy). 3. John Hancock probably could work on ye ui too, if only because in cyberspace no-one can see you smile. John, adding a smiley after some of your more outrageous statements would probably eliminate difficulties for all concerned. :) 4. For those of you who have read Glenn saying that even Dakin admits errors in his history, yes, there is a mistake in my on line version, but is relatively minor and will be corrected in my next version. For the most part, I stand behind my history, which is available at: http://www.indiana.edu/~iutkd/info/faqcell.html If you have any questions about tkd or hkd history, please feel free to email me at burdickd@indiana.edu 5. I share John's dismay at editors. My article in the Journal of Asian Martial Arts was similarly changed. The editor there (who is a wonderful fellow by the way!) removed my diacritical marks and rearranged the order of names (I try to always write the surname last, regardless of Asian convention) and unfortunately some of the names did NOT get transposed, which caused some confusion. Oh, and yes, Glenn also took me to task for the errors that arose of these changes. 6. Lastly, yes John, I agree that Glenn is pretty paranoid. A friend of mine has a great saying in his .sig file. As I recall it goes something like this: "We would worry a lot less about what other people think of us, if we realized how little they do. Ok, hopefully that will forestall the emails I usually receive after posts about Glenn. If you want to know any more, please email me, as I kept all email and posts between Glenn and myself for legal purposes. Now, Jamaica Powers asked about sumo and upright wrestling. Upright wrestling was the ancient Olympic sport, and like Sumo was a form of standing wrestling in which one lost a fall when something other than a foot touched the ground. I would further class sumo as a form of belt wrestling like ssirum (Korean wrestling) and schwingen (Swiss wrestling), since there are number of techniques that are based on the use of the belt. I'm not sure what you mean by "new" Sumo though. Are you talking about changes in the Japanese style, or about some form of American sumo? I don't know...but it only takes 3 days to get kicked off the TKD Net. Ahhhhh. I feel so much better now that I've achieved this life goal. Anyway....maybe I can get back to something constructive again now that I don't have to attend the "Temple of Glenn". That is probably true, however, rank is typically defined as Dan rank. The Kukkiwon doesn't monitor/control/care-about gup rank.
