I'm testing for my orange belt in a couple of weeks, and I'm really begining to appreciate how beneficial the MA are to body/spirit/mind. Any tips for my first tournament this saturday (Vt. Nationals)? Tang Soo Do! d. Ahearn ------------------------------ From: CMPorter@webtv.net (Chris Porter) Date: Mon, 1 Mar 1999 00:47:58 -0500 (EST) Subject: the_dojang: Drilling. Have any of the instructors on this list found repetative drilling in a single session to be effective or ineffective? I am referring to a 100 low blocks, middle punches, kicks etc. I beleive that we learn by day to day repetition of a given technique but what about many at one time? I wonder if this type of drilling adds to the "way of no way" response. Date: Mon, 1 Mar 1999 08:29:31 -0500 Subject: the_dojang: Wear many hats/Jamaica Jamaica, I'd like a little clarification on one thing in this post: you mention "ref, compete and coach" at tournaments! Can you elaborate on the "coach" aspect? One writen rule in the ATA is that while ring-side encouragement is allowed, no coaching is permitted - you don't want one competitor to have an unfair advantage! I'd like to hear what your thoughts are on coaching, how it helps, how it achieved, and how order is maintained in these tournaments - you've already hit on one problem: someone needs to excuse themself from one duty to perform another! I can't see this working well at an ATA tournament, as each "ref" (judge) needs to sign the appropriate paperwork on the scores for that ring! This is accomplished at the end of the ring, so all three judges need to be present for the entire match! Thanks Mark.Lasich@alcoa.com I asked for everything so I could enjoy life. Has anyone been in a situation where they have been surprised, scared, or otherwise taken off guard by someone they know? I am interested in what the "natural" response was.....did you jump 10 feet in the air, or assume a fighting stance and be on the ready? I have heard a story of a fourth degree cleaning his dojang after a long day. Two students walk in on him and startle him (he was not expecting anyone) - his response, after 10+ years of training? Completely startled - - no defensive reaction whatsoever, unless you count jumping and yelling (no, not kihap).....Hmmmmm, I can honestly say I am more on the being startled end, than the defensive end! As a result, I can complete some techniques, particularly those with take-down or control components, without performing them as well as I should, by virtue of my size and power advantage. I'm beginning to view this as a problem. It prevents me from mastering techniques as accurately as I'd like, which detracts from my own satisfaction with my accomplishments, and it leaves me less than optimally prepared for a possible street confrontation with a larger or stronger person. Has anyone else encountered this, and if so, did you find any specific solutions? Tang Soo! Scott A. I stopped by a neighborhood TKD school this weekend, just to inquire about their classes (schedules, prices, etc.). Over the course of the discussion, I asked if they included any HKD instruction in their TKD training (as so many places do these days). Their response was that after a student reached 1st dan in TKD, then that student would be eligible to participate in a series of HKD seminars they offered (IIRC a total of ten seminars, each 4-5 hours long); at the successful conclusion of which, said student would then be awarded 1st dan ranking in HKD. Does this seem right to you? Is it commonly done? How is such a practice regarded, by those in a position to have an informed opinion about it (= all you guys)? The school is WTF-affiliated, and they told me that the HKD dan ranking *does* come from the Korean Hapkido Federation -- indeed, they emphasized that the student *must* provide evidence of their WTF TKD ranking as part of applying to the KHF for 1st dan HKD ranking, so I guess it's "legit" from an "official" standpoint insofar it clearly seems to be some sort of special arrangement between the WTF and the KHF (whew, that's a lotta alphabet soup...). Still, it just strikes me as odd that the KHF would award anyone a black belt in HKD after the completeion of a few seminars (even granting that 1st dan in TKD suggests proficiency in those areas of overlap between the two arts, e.g. kicking & striking). Does this ring a bit hollow with anyone else, or is it just me? Would you really expect a 1st dan in HKD who got there via maybe 50 hours of seminars to be as accomplished as one who got there in the slower, more traditional way? Just seeking others' perspectives & reactions...
