If there was even a 5 minute break from your ring (as a ref) and there was a door or an emergency exit anywhere close many of the Korean GM's and Masters bolted for the door to have a few smokes. Today, largely due to some of the bans on smoking in the US, smoking has significantly increased in the Asian countries. And today even though smoking dropped off for awhile in the US it has increased again especially in our younger population. http://ymn.org/tobacco/facts.shtml In most sports activities the younger male athletes rely heavily on chew to get them through their training and sports which of course is equally dangerous in it's own way. Does anybody have this problem in their classes? Does anybody offer smoking/chew cessation classes as part of their nutrition and health awareness? If you are reading this and not from the US is this very acceptable in your country and at tournaments. Most tournaments in the US that are held in public buildings like schools that do not permit smoking but what about your dojang or other tournament sites? Do you permit parents and friends to smoke? I'm hoping that some of you could recommend a good TSD Dojang or two in the Bradenton/Sarsota area. Or a good MA school of another style. My association doesn't have a school directly in that area and I will not be opening one for a least a year. Any recommendations would be helpful. thank you, Stacy ------------------------------ From: Date: Sun, 21 Mar 1999 11:08:40 -0800 (PST) Subject: the_dojang: Patch thanks Thanks to Stan Lim for sending a couple of patches from his days in Malaysia, the Kluang Taekwon-do Association and Kelab Tae Kwon-Do. What >do you WTF'ers out there think? > >Peace, > >Michael Sarles >msarles@ior.com > Hi, Michael, I think the ITF forms are significantly more complicated than the Tae Guks or Pal Gaes. First off, most schools require 9 ITF forms through the black belt and 3 more for your first degree, whereas most WTF schools require 8 through the black belt and only 1 for your first degree. Second, WTF forms tend to be shorter than ITF forms. Just compare Tae Guk 8 with Chung Moo. Third, the techniques introducted through your first 12 forms in ITF are harder than the first 9 in WTF. Fourth, many of the WTF forms look the same to me, and when I do them they tend to feel about the same. There is little to no "personality" to each form. Our school is a WTF school that still uses the ITF forms, and except for the disadvantage that puts us at in forms competitions, I think it has made our practioners better. Over time I have read on these forums the beliefs and non-beliefs of secret types of training. When you reach the Instructor or Master Instructor level I was wondering how you trained and with what beliefs. Do you feel at this level that the perfection of the art (previous thread) is the ultimate in your training or do you believe others have knowledge that can take you a step or two or three further and perhaps open new doors whether it be the physical or mental or spiritual? Do you train by yourself or do you seek out your own GM or perhaps other GM's to up your training? Or do you believe that at the higher ranks the training must come from within yourself? That it is not new skills that are learned but a deeper understanding of the skills you have learned to date. Do you think it's necessary to take trips to Korea (if you can afford them) to enhance your training? Do you believe there is something there that is offered that has not been brought to the states? And why do you feel that way? It does seem to me that ITF forms >are a little more complicated (no flame intended) than WTF forms. What >do you WTF'ers out there think? Having studied under both systems, I tend to agree that ITF forms are a little more complex in terms of introducing more advanced moves into the form, earlier in the set of forms. Personally, I think that ITF forms are "prettier" compared to the TaeGeuk forms I am learning now. However, this applies mainly to the lower belt forms. By the time you get to the 1st and 2nd Kup forms, I think that TaeGeuk forms look pretty neat as well. The tradeoff is that TaeGeuk forms are more symmetrical and organized. Each form builds on the previous one (again, more pronounced in the lower belt forms).
