Donley" >> Have any of you trained under Masters that changed forms to suit how they believed they should be performed or created new ones to further the Art or your training?<< I have. My last school was Bae's Tae Kwon Do Academy (now Baeplex) in Newport News. Master A.D. Bae was a student of GM Won Kuk Lee (Oh Do Kwan founder, if I've got my kwans correct), so he comes from pretty traditional lineage. However, over the years, he adapted the WTF Tae Geuk forms to incorporate some additional movements from other arts. It was hard to get used to after coming from a WTF school that taught the straight forms, and it's hard to get used to not doing it now that I'm at yet another school. On the one hand, I found the "extras" interesting and I think TKD should always be open to innovation. On the other hand, if everyone goes his own way and there is no standardization, it can create problems when changing schools, competing in tournaments, etc. My suggestion would be to teach the standard forms (tae geuks, pal gwes, chon jis, song ahms, etc.) as the main organizing body teaches them, and if you want to innovate, create your own additional forms, or one steps, or what have you. Just my $.02. It was an international match between USA and Peru. I prevailed and the decision was reversed; it was simply a mathematical error. That was a semi-final match. My student went on to win the final against Mexico, too. The sad thing was the Peruvian Coach, who, coincidentally, I had become close with at the '91World Championships in Athens, Greece, acted with great hostility then, and still won't shake my hand today. JH ------------------------------ From: Aaron Harmon Date: Mon, 22 Mar 1999 13:40:37 -0800 Subject: the_dojang: Good attitude I just thought i would share with you something that happened at our Dojang this last week. One of my friends was testing for his 1st dan. The last part of the testing is done with the rest of the school, along with other Gup Tests that are happening at the same time on Thursday. At the end of the test, Mr. Coulter, the testee, was going to do some breaking that was also going to be his demo at the ceremony on Saturday. He had a cool break planned. Four people would accost him, ala self defense sequence, and surround him. Then Seh Sung stopped everyone and indicated targets on their bodies and we would all place boards there instead, and then he would break each one by one. He had already done this once with re-breakable boards about a week earlier. The last kick was a flying side kick, held about 7 feet in the air (we have a brown belt who is 6'10") jumping off of the back of a kneeling person. Unfortunately his footing slipped on the jump and he landed badly and blew out his knee (torn tendons and ligaments galore). On Saturday, at the graduation, Seh Sung told us about a conversation that he had with him on Friday. Mr. Coulter called and instead of saying, "Damn, now I have to miss out on my BB ceremony," or, "Damn, I do not get to do that cool demo." instead he said, "I am sorry I let you down on Thursday night. I guess I will just have to keep working." He got his BB on Saturday to a standing ovation. Kinda chokes you up [sniff]. Aaron Harmon 2nd Gup PS. We went out later and he said he was trying to look at the bright side of it. At least he has a great story to go along with his injury. To a single guy, that's useful. ------------------------------ From: "Jamaica Power" Date: Mon, 22 Mar 1999 15:01:31 PST Subject: the_dojang: 1-800-TKD-FEAR I've been checking out the implementation of an 800 resource line. Much like many health centers and alternate organizations use. We had talked about student manuals and I think those are most important and mandatory but I also know lots of kids/parents came home from school or work and it's not exactly the first thing they pick up. Lots of people are also auditory learners. And sometimes I figure when a parent wants to help their youngster be prepared for class it is an easy way to access information at the push of a button. Public school systems have been using similar systems quite effectively for many areas including teachers having their own numbers where parents can call to find out the night/weeks homework assignments and extra-credit projects. Parents love it. I would have something like push #1 for white/yellow belt information, #2 school hours, #3 forms, #4 nutrition, #5 exercise and stretching, #6 testing requirements, #7 weekly class assignments, #8 tip and techniques and a bunch of other stuff. Does anybody have one in place. What is the overall utilization rate and then the utilization rate by specific category? If you don't have one does your organization? Thanks. Perhaps, out in the trailer-parks, toothless white trash may'chaw-n-spit' all day long, but, thankfully, these are not the folks coming to my door. SESilz _________________________________ My, that's a rather dogmatic statment, also inaccurate. Historically chew, spittoons and cuspidors have been the gentleman's choice. http://www.emory.edu/SPOKE/hunting/spittoon.html Also in the most upper middle class, yuppie, white top ten schools one of the primary health concerns is chew and the young athletes. Go to any hockey, football, wrestling team and ask them or ask their dentists. They are quite proud of it. Comes in a zillion different flavors now-a-days. And to get the real young youngsters into the game plan there is a product called chew jerky. It's real beef jerky shredded up and sold to kids. Quite healthy but it presents an interesting image. Found your comment interesting to say the least. I would like to believe that somehow magically this form of tension reliever and enjoyment has escaped our martial arts community but I find that hard to believe. I am happy that it has not entered your dojang. However not seeing it doesn't mean it isn't there.
