What is the real question? Hello, I wanted to ask you guys your opinion on Racism. I live in California I found a tournament I want to compete in next year hopefully but it's being held in Lancaster where a couple of weeks ago 2 skinheads beat a Black Man with a hammer. This was the second time a racist thing has happen in Lancaster in the last 3-6 years. My dad drives me to tournaments and I want to keep him safe as well as keep me safe Franklin ____________________________ Happy Easter Sunday Franklin. What exactly is it that you want to know? I have travelled to many tournaments and have been involved in many situations (some postive and some very frightening.) I have met wonderful individuals and I have also been physically assaulted during my tournament travels. Are you most concerned about the safety of your father and yourself while you are travelling to different territories or are you looking for a deeper understanding of the situation? If you would prefer, you may contact me via private email. You have provided me with some interesting food for thought as I pursue my studies in TaeKwonDo. I write our dojang's monthly newsletter and some of your topics have provided inspiration for articles.Darlene ______________________________________ Darlene, thank you for the kind words. If there are any articles that you have written that you would like to share via this digest I think many of us would really appreciate reading them. If you are not comfortable with that I would really appreciate receiving a copy of your newsletter smail or private email. Glad you decided to de-lurk for awhile. A personal sense, which I usually don't do so that I can respond to the plateaus query from my perspective. I think (IMHO) part of the martial arts training or any other activity in life is to acknowledge the inevitable plateaus, the very dry times - the deserts - where we so thirst for new knowledge and understanding, the incredible highs, the mountain tops the cherished euphoria; and the valleys where there is just a peaceful serenity of achieving, and, knowing. and appreciating. I have experienced all of the above and I suspect I will continue to experience them again, and again, and again. I was at the top of Mount Kilimanjaro when I had a physical setback. I was at the peak of performance, ref'ing, coaching, and all other aspects of martial arts. Things couldn't have been going better. I was then diagnosed with a terminal brain tumor. So I fell off Mount Kilimanjaro into a very deep pit. But along the way I found out that while I fell into a pit of temporary despair I was also given the equipment to climb out of the pit and rise to a new height of sensation and understanding that I had never been able to comprehend. And while I never really left the world of martial arts; (I like to use the term that I took a sabbatical) I have indeed re-entered the m.a. world with a different locus of control. It isn't a higher black belt level, it isn't a higher ref status; but it is a higher personal achievement status with a depth of understanding and insight that doesn't need the designation of title or rank. And while I certainly don't dismiss or diminish titles and rank I am just saying that I have been fortunate to add new dimensions and depth to those titles and ranks that I already held and it has given them new and precious meanings so that now I look forward to finding new avenues of challenges and accomplishments in areas and organizations that I had never thought to seek out before. So while it appears we may be standing still or on a plateau or even regressing we are indeed actually moving forward. (Hey, I think Willy Nelson wrote a song about this). Take care. I saw The Matrix. It was sort of a class trip, from the dojang to the movie theatre. I thought the fight scenes were good and well used, although I wish more use had been made of the "you can bend the laws of gravity" conceit and the fights were less linear (moving back and forth along a straight line). Best opening reel I've seen in a movie in long time, by the way. JB ------------------------------ From: Perry Seto Date: Sun, 4 Apr 1999 22:55:48 -0700 Subject: the_dojang: Promotional testing Jamaica, In answer to your post regarding promtional testing, this is how we do it at Cal (short version): Colored belts are more or less tested in order. We try to have two or three "rings" going at one time, two in our matted room and one going in our hardwood floor room. Each judge's table usually has four to seven black belt judges. The white belt test is the hardest - we typically have over 100 white belts testing, sometimes over 200. The numbers for the other colored belts goes down as the kup rank gets higher. We wait for all of the colored belt testing to be finished before we start black belt testing - all levels. The colored belts are all graded by the rank and file black belts. From 1st Dan on up - Dr. Min and Master Park get involved. If memory serves me correctly, 4th dan on up sit at the judges table for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Dan tests. For 4th and 5th Dan testing, then its Dr. Min and Master Park only. Our promotionals are held once a semester - at the end of each semester - therefore about once every 16 - 18 weeks. They are on a Saturday and typically go from 12:00 noon to around 6:00 PM. Then all of the black belts - including anyone who just tested for 1st dan go out to ....... party (dinner and drinking anyway). :-))))))) - -Perry- pseto@aptl.com ------------------------------ From: Karel van der Walt Date: Mon, 05 Apr 1999 13:54:41 +0300 Subject: the_dojang: RE: Shaolin-do groin block query Is this the palm facing out, fingers down right in front and below the ... target block? In my geen belt grading a black belt kick a front turning into my hand when I did a straight back kick (too slow hey but this was grading sparring in a foreign dojang). Everybody flinched and expected the worst but i barely noticed. I do not think i do that block as reflexively anymore. Unlearning? yes I remember the 'suicide' kick too - -dropping into it on that painted concrete floor. That was Wing Chun.
