This would not be done in conjunction with your weights. I agree with Laura, quicky jerks with weights...bad juju for the muscles, joints, etc. I've done what I call 'line drills'. Kind of like the stuff one used to do in basketball. You know...start at one line, run to the closest, drop and touch the line, then run back to the original line, drop, touch, then back out to the next furthest line, drop, touch, and back to the original. Try to make every move off of a line as quick and explosive as possible. You could do this on a gym floor and feel it. I also alternate when I run between long runs and then a 'drill' run. A drill run I go on my regular 3 mile run, but after a mile warm up, I sprint for 3 blocks...all out. Then back to an easy jog. After another 1/2 mile, sprint again, etc. > I might also suggest doing forms or other 'drills' (like slow > kicks) holding > one or two pound weights and/or ankle weights. You will want to do these > drills VERY (almost slow motion) slowly and with good control. This should be very controlled and not done to a point of exhaustion. Physical therapists I work out with say that adding weight to your ankles is fine in controlled workouts. BUT don't go out and do something like run with them on... > > There are a number of great books on the market but I prefer video. For martial arts, > bicycling or hiking are just two great choices. I can't remember the gentlmans name...but I think he's German or Polish and I've got his video training routine of gaining flexibility through weight training. He's a doctor or has his doctorate in physiology or something...anyhoo... He preaches that while bicycling can be a GREAT workout, try to avoid it if you are looking to gain flexibility. He feels that because of the movement and focus that a bicycle has on the muscle groups in the legs, it can actually decrease a persons flexibility. Anybody else ever hear that?
