(from my limited understanding of this stuff) Check out the site http://www.orbs.org It is an attempt to filter out SPAM. There are sites that allow anyone and everyone to route e-mail through their site. I believe this is called open routing and it is a bad thing, bad in the sense that anyone (i.e. a SPAMmer) can send out worthless e-mail. Sites that allow open routing get listed in the database maintained by www.orbs.org, many sites check incoming e-mail against that database, if it comes from a site listed in the database it is rejected. When it is rejected back to your site, your mail system lists it as 'user unknown' and sends the email back to you. This does not mean that YOUR site is a site that permits spam. It means that your site is routing through a site that permits spam, perhaps w/o their knowledge. So, if you submit a post to the list and it is bounced back with a 'user unknown' look for a line in the header mentioning relay.orbs.org. If you see relay.orbs.org tell your postmaster (postmaster@your.domainname) to check out www.orbs.org and to please route through a site that does not permit open routing. It will up to you to have your site correct the problem. Do what you can to help wipe out SPAM. I looked at the cover and said, I know that woman...I know those patches...wait a minute, that's a Tang Soo Do dojang and that's Karen..... Sure enough, the book is written by a woman that I know from my days with the ITF and putting together Tang Soo Do Illustrated. It left me wondering: don't publishers double check credentials of people who write these things???? Sure a lot of TSD people cross over, but just because you're a second dan TSD doesn't mean that you're qualified to write a book on TKD. Am I missing something here? Tang Soo! Karla ============================= Indeed, you forgot to mention that Keith Yates, a 9th Dan TKD Grandmaster, co-authored the book. (Co-wrote... he somehow helped out... does it matter? He helped compile...) I borrowed the book from my instructor to do some reading-up and get ahead of the other students (who merely looked, pointed at it, and said, "ooh, purtty book!" and went back to goofing around). Needless to say, it doesn't qualify as an idiot's guide. For one thing, the history was pretty murky and obscure. It wasn't all cracked up like it was supposed to be. A couple good points here and there, but I sensed a bias towards TKD in general as mentioned by other people on the digest already. Frankly, you'd be better off mooching from somebody than spending your money on it. What I didn't completely get was how a good deal of history was just skipped, hopped, kicked to the side and ignored. (For those of you who have done your reading, you know that there was a fourth, unofficial kingdom more affiliated with Japan than Koguryo, Silla, and Paekche. The Japanese name is Mimana--the Korean name escapes me right now. That's just a prime example.) Also, where was the mention of the specifics of the downfall of the Three Kingdoms into Koryo? And what about the tribal peoples who eventually made up those kingdoms? What about the general purpose of the creation of the Hwarangdan? Lots of pieces missing... just like buying a 1000-piece puzzle with half of the pieces missing. Not worth the time. However, for those of you who are interested in some base history of Korea, a book by the name of _The Passing of Korea_ written by a gentleman whose name escapes me at the moment (the book is packed and in a crate...). It includes some pictures taken around the turn of the 20th century and some information you'd never hear about, like the curse befalling the Yi Dynasty because they didn't listen to a prophet concerning where the capital was to be built. The publisher is Yonsei University Press, I think. Another $.02 posted. In most martial art supplier magazines, you rarely see women outfitted in the goodies; it's mostly men sporting the items. With movies, it's the same thing. Women are not as alien as men might think, and vice versa. We just think completely differently, and this might be the root of all inequality. >> Probably the answer is to why you rarely hear about the women is that percentage-wise they are way in the minority. Also, in the Century catalog, there's almost always a few examples of Kathy Long in a uniform or kicking a bag, etc. BTW, it might be just as well that women aren't used so much. If you ever have a chance to check into some of the martial arts magazines from the 80's and earlier, you'll be in for real culture shock. Almost every woman is wrapped around some guy and/or in a very suggestive pose that indicates she's only there to be with or get her man. This attitude still prevails. At a Pro-TKD-style competition last year, the promoters wanted the ladies to take off their uniform tops and fight in pants and a sports bra, "for the spectators." No takers. I'll bet those guys are still wondering why... With regard to your final point, you are wise beyond your years. Why are the judges at USTU events so secretive about the scores they give? It's not so noticeable in sparring - they're marking on little bits of paper you rarely will see or scoring electronically; but in poomse, oh my. It's nearly impossible to catch all the scores when the judging is being done because the judges keep their hands in their laps (some even bend over almost to the floor to avoid being seen by spectators), and if you look at the scorekeeper's papers, you may (usually will) be treated like an arch-criminal. I once saw a parent escorted off the floor for looking at the scores. Can anyone explain why this happens? What's the point (no pun intended)? Now both refs will get a certificate saying they participated in the same tournament whether its local, state, or national. They both will log in their passport books or somewhere else that they were in attendance. They both are equal as far as moving up in the ranks. I really think the organization should log into a simple data base program (or do it manually) and keep track of what refs did what matches and how many hours they put in. Whether they served as head of court or corner ref. Whether they did color belts or black belts, etc. I think criteria should be set that x number of hours are needed, before you can advance to the next level. Much like an airplane pilot. If any organizations are doing this could you please share and elaborate. Thanks. >> I'm in complete agreement with this one. A great idea whose time may have come? I was usually expected to break two boards minimum. I'd really like to discuss two items. Techniques and flying over people including little people (children). Now when I look back I think I frequently botched this break because I froze up in a sense (mentally) when I knew I had to jump over people and when they had children line up it was even worse. Even when they had them scrunch together, wrap their hands around one another, put their hands over their necks and layered chest protectors on their backs and put adults at the ends. In reverse I have also been one of those people on the floor and have gotten flattened by some large men that couldn't quite make the flying leap. I am not one for overestimating my abilities. This break and the particular kick was not a strength of mine. Going over these people was like flying over a mine field only the people that might get neck/back injuries were the kids and adults on the floor. So while that sometimes motivates people to make sure they make it over the people on the floor, it had the reverse effect on me. >> I am so totally opposed to this particular break I can hardly articulate it. Every time I see one (usually in a competition), I just wait for the broken neck or back to happen. And, no, it hasn't happened YET, but that doesn't mean it won't. And then there's the problem of having seen the most supremely confident person fail at a break. When you fail this one, where do you fall? Who gets hurt? I can't imagine what motivates adults to put children in this position. At least adults can say "No, get someone else." But, what child would say "No" to his instructor or the god-like black belt? To add another question, does anyone else wonder about the "why" of breaking boards? Some people say it's only physics, some say it's a trick and when you know the trick there's no problem. But I've never yet seen a school where breaking was part of the curriculum - although it's invariably part of the testing process. I've never heard anyone explain the physics or the trick to it. So why is included as a part of the testing requirements? And what does it prove so far as your ability as a martial artist? Not trying to start an uproar -- I just don't get it.
