Jamaica, I think those were some excellent examples of what experience can teach you. Perhaps you can start a web site, or get a link off an existing site where people can share their experiences as referees. Students like me who want to become referees in the future will definitely find the information very valuable. Thank you. Stan Lim slim@employees.org ------------------------------ From: Date: Wed, 21 Apr 1999 13:19:24 -0700 (PDT) Subject: the_dojang: running and knees Well, I'm one of those folks that ruined their knees by running. To be more specific, running on concrete. I ran the mile in high school (30 years ago) and continued running almost daily until I was probably 37 or 40. But I had bad ankles from too many sprains (basketball), so I had to run on a good level even surface. I didn't like running around and around on a track, so I ran on the sidewalks. Now both of my knees are damaged. The surgeon has scoped them trying to do some repair, but with 0 results. I've seen the damage on the monitor during the procedure. The Dr. claims it is typical damage from running too many years on hard surfaces. So, if you run (and I miss it dearly) don't do it on concrete. Even asphalt is better for the knees/ankles/feet than concrete. What are the requirements? > > What are the pros and cons of becoming a referee? > Does it exclude you from competing in other tournaments? > In the ATA, there are three levels of tournament judge. For each level, you have to attend a certification clinic and pass a written test on the rules, plus meet rank and age requirements. Level 1. Must be at least 12 years old, at least First Degree Black Belt Decided. Qualified to be a corner judge for colored belt competition. Level 2. Must be at least 14 years old, at least First Degree Black Belt Decided. Includes Level 1, also qualified to be a corner judge for Black Belt competition and a center judge for colored belt competition. Level 3. Must be at least 16 years old, at least Second Degree Black Belt Decided. Includes Level 2, also qualified to be a center judge for Black Belt competition. As Black Belts, we are expected to judge. Level 3s get a $10 discount on the entry fees for the tournament. I think it's a blast. I'm probably going to semi-retire from tournament competition after next year, but I will never stop judging. ------------------------------ From: Date: Wed, 21 Apr 1999 17:12:39 -0700 (PDT) Subject: the_dojang: . ------------------------------ End of The_Dojang-Digest V6 #214 ******************************** Support the USTU by joining today!
