You can read the requirements on the AAU web site at www.aautaekwondo.org. You not only have to get certified, but you must also recertify on an annual basis. I really enjoy refereeing. It's a great way to give back to the art. I wouldn't go so far as to say there is no knee strain at all, but there is none of the high-impact variety. Once you get to the point where you can safely unstrap the pillow from your butt, there is not much impact to any body parts;>) There are some obvious disadvantages, too. You can't skate everyplace you could run (requires a smooth, hard surface), and mixing it up with automobiles can be, uh, interesting. But unlike bicycling, you can get a (nearly) compete leg extension with the right stroke, as recommended by T. Kurz (Stretching Scientifically) for m.a. practicioners. I have an ex-student who has recently moved to Columbus, Montana (about 40 miles west of Billings) and is interested in beginning training in martial arts again. Does anyone know of a reputable TKD, TSD, HKD or similar style instructor within this general area? This potential student is a talented, hard working young lady with a positive attitude on life who would be a welcome addition to any dojang. Please feel free to contact me privately or on the list; warnings appreciated also. Thanks. The wrong shoe will screw up your knees and ankles quicker than anything. Runner's World Magazine has a great analysis of shoe models twice a year, and a few minutes' research will pay great dividends. Another trick is to take whatever you're wearing to run in now, and go to a running shoe store. Show them the shoes, explain how much running you're going to do, and any problems you've experienced. If cost is a concern, many of the stores carry previous year's models which will have many of the same characteristics of what you're looking for at a substantial discount. They now have shoes if you supinate or if you pronate or if you're a heel striker or if you need stability or if you're heavy, etc, etc, etc. That wasn't the case years ago. But too late for me and my knees...
