Actually, I am joining an established Hapkido school where I am a student. I'll be teaching Taekwondo and Tang Soo Do. I'm looking for other ideas than the standard martial art fare. Cardio Karate readily comes to mind and I'm thinking of an early morning class along the lines of the Military's Physical Training (PT). Others call it Boot Camp and Navy Seal Training seems to be in vogue. This class would focus on calisthenics, aerobic activities and stretching. Strength training focusing using the body's own resistance and since it is a martial arts school maybe throw in some practical self defense. I live in Texas so the climate allows for outdoor training almost year round. In fact I often say I get my best tans in the winter. The summers are just too hot to lay outside. But, to get back on point, has anyone done something like this? Can anyone offer advise? Another idea is emphasize the "Martial" in the martial arts. For you NAPMA members you know this is the "in thing" now. Well, I don't think its anything new, I'm sure many of us have had these thought for many years. The fiscal reality is that a school has to cater to the "martially challenged" to be successful. Not that this is a bad thing but it is not "martial." If it takes two, three or four years to learn just the basics and get a black belt, well let's just say if something happens in that time you're history. I know several of you have issued challenges citing the benefits of Olympic TKD vs. traditionalist (read couch potatoes) (yes, I'm a republican). But how would your elite players fare against someone who wasn't playing? Perhaps many of the elite military units or a convict with the training I hear they get in prison? I'm thinking of adding a class specifically for self defense and adding elements of this to each and every class wherein a student would walk out the door with something that works the very first night. Any ideas on this subject? Sorry I didn't start out to make this post so long. Terry L. Davis ------------------------------ From: "Jamaica Power" Date: Sat, 24 Apr 1999 10:51:36 PDT Subject: the_dojang: More On Referee Qualifications Well so far I've taken the liberty of expressing my thoughts that I think referees should be advanced in rank by: 1). # of hours in the ring not attendance (appearance) at a tournament which would then help decrease the vast discrepancies between the quality of ref's at all levels. 2). Type of matches, ie junior colored belt forms or black belt finals 3). Corner judge or center ref 4). Awareness attributes, so I will add one or two more things I'd like to see required... 5). CPR training and certification (adult and child), and 6). First AID training, 7). Blood Borne Pathogen Training, 8). AIDS training. #'s 5 through 8 I would like to see implemented not for the ability to administer treatment but rather to increase the awareness of ref's prior to any occurrences happening whether they be asthma victims, epileptic seizures, heart problems, dehydration, sports injuries. And to increase the abilities to see these situations sooner and then to request medical attention quicker. I would like to see a more proactive approach not reactive or sometimes the panic approach as I've typically seen occur. jamaica_power@hotmail.com _______________________________________________________________ Get Free Email and Do More On The Web. Do you feel your training is really preparing you for an unexpected assault or confrontation that might occur outside the dojang. Have your awareness capabilities increased? Do you think you have within you the ability to attack back (if the situation deemed necessary) by your assailant? Would you be able to physically assault them if it was you or them, ie grabbing out the eyes, ears, and other sensitive areas to render harm. Have you been taught alternate ways of escape? Have you been taught safety on the internet? Would you be able to attack your opponent if they were another woman, teenager (female or male). In today's society I still see the majority of women putting themselves at great risk to help another woman, woman with a child or teenager even though it could be a setup to greater problems. More thoughts on your training or past experiences? How do you feel when you spar or throw a large male martial artist? Are you confident or deep down inside does it make you feel very uncomfortable? Do you train with weapons? Do you feel your instructors address your situations as a female. jamaica_power@hotmail.com _______________________________________________________________ Get Free Email and Do More On The Web. The Black Belt Hall of Fame has been around for some time but I always thought that was reserved for someone special (originally). Now I'm seeing presentations, awards and recognition for athlete of the year (of the month), referee of the year (of the tournament, or that performs exceptionally). coach of the year, instructor, etc. I've also seen some people feel it's okay for one group but feel that it shouldn't be condoned in another group (sort of an elitist attitude - IMHO). Do you think these awards have a place in the world of martial arts? Don't you think that the more awards that are given the less they are special? Where do politics start and end in the awards? Is it okay at colored belt level but should not go on to Black Belts? If you think it's okay for Black Belts and ref's don't you think that goes against the tenets of martial hearts, specifically humility? Or do you think this is the okay and part of the Americanization of the arts? Or do you think these things inspire others? jamaica_power@hotmail.com _______________________________________________________________ Get Free Email and Do More On The Web. There were several factors that went into making that decision but suffice it to say that it has worked out for the best. The show has asked that I appear sometime during the coming week however the exact date has not been set as yet. If you check the WWW.ARTBELL.COM site I believe that they will have the day announced in advance [in the event that I cannot e-mail you with the info] in addition to the station that the program plays locally and the call in numbers. Sorry for any inconvenience that may have been experienced. I hope that you enjoy this interview and the Discovery Channel's show "Beyond Bizarre" that will feature my specialty sometime in late Aug. or early Sept. I received my kukkiwon certification as a 1st Poom when I was 12, and in order to test for my (essentially a black belt) I learned Pal-gue forms and did standerd black belt forms as well (Koryo, etc) At the school I attended that offered 40 minute classes they utilized Tae-guk forms, which I am not familiar with except that they are very similar to lower level Okinawan forms (simple) and the instructor told me that in order to receive black belt certification from the kukkiwon I should have been learning Tae-guks and that Tae-guk forms are REQUIRED for kukkiwon certification. Does anyone have any info on this? Why are there three major forms systems and what organization utilizes each? The following week - state president's meeting, mid-year meeting and I have been selected to referee at team trials.
