I was thinking that most martial artists from years back would probably say their GM was the wisest person or their father. I was wondering who is the wisest person in your life that inspired you the most both in m.a. and outside the dojang. And how did they do this? The ques. is "Are martial arts really art?" I have to provide ref. to various books and philosophers, yada yada yada. IF any of you have read articles that may be helpful with background info. or info. pertaining directly to the question please e-mail me at home or post it to the list. Any PHL students or PHL lovers feel free to chime in with any works you have read. Lastly, I plan to show video clips throughout b/c no one in class has studied an art before except one Filippino stylist. What do you think I should get for the video clips? Which form is most beautiful to you? I will be interviewing several people and asking the question "What do you say to a critic to defend the statement 'I practice a martial art'? Also, I will address the issue of the relationship btwn art and virtue [morality] and whether and how art can help society be more virtous. Anyone with ANY opinion is welcome to email me at home. Thanks so much. Dawne No1IDIC@aol.com ------------------------------ From: "Jamaica Power" Date: Sun, 02 May 1999 14:27:02 PDT Subject: the_dojang: One more for your Collection, Stan! Or maybe in your family life or friends? Was there a change >in how you dealt with situations? When I was learning TKD as a teenager, I felt a definite boost in my self- confidence that was more than the typical "I'm a teenager who can conquer the world and I fear nothing". I know that I learned how to handle physical pain and not give up when I failed at something. Walking down the street, I felt comfortable that I could defend myself from any would-be attacker. (Probably some teenaged arrogance there :-)) I think the biggest change for me personally is that knowing how to "fight" actually made me less inclined to do so when the situation might have escallated to that level. >Or maybe sometimes we don't see the changes in our life but others do? Did >anybody ever comment that you were carrying yourself a bit prouder, or more >relaxed at meetings, etc? Thanks People have commented that I seem to be confident all the time, and that's something that I attribute to my MA training. My husband noticed the difference before I did. He said I carried myself more confidently, and that I was much more at ease than I had been before. I notice that I don't have much trouble in public speaking type situations anymore ( I used to get major stage fright). I even participated in a class demonstration for our dojang that we had at a local mall, with several hundred spectators watching us. My husband was floored that I did this. It has seemed to change my perspective , and has put some of my old fears in their proper place. TaeKwon Do has really enriched the quality of my life. On a slightly different tangent, I very much enjoy this digest. I have received some great tips and advice, and wonderful Jamaica_Power has personally helped me through a rough spot in my training. What a great forum to share experiences in! My thanks to Ray Terry for doing this. (Also, to Stan Lim : an M.A. joke page would be fun!) Well, there are my two cents, thanks again! My name is Gregory Moritz and I am a 16 yr. old high school = junior in Atlanta that has been practicing martial arts for 9 years now. = Paul brought up some very interesting points in his post. In my = experience I have found that martial arts training can in fact be of use = in situations such as that. I don't feel the need to go into detail, = but a few years ago my sense of responsibility was not what it is now = and I put myself in more than a few precarious positions. These = involved being in a situation where my life was in imminent danger = several times. I can honestly say that I survived every one of those = times due to my training. Martial arts not only gave me the techniques = to protect myself in those situations, but also gave me the necessary = mentality not to freeze up. Just the response of one teenager, thanks = for listening (er...reading). Choong Sung, Greg - ------=_NextPart_000_001A_01BE94D0.484D81A0 Content-Type: text/html; [ 60 lines deleted.
