I would like to know how different schools have their students hold the bags for kicks and punches. Meaning when you have students hold bags/paddles do you have them lock their stance so the bagholder does not move backward if someone is doing a back spinning kick with a cannon ball effect or a side kick. What about with crescent kicks. Should you be locked or should your arm go with the flow of the kick or punch. I guess there are two issues here. One is the safety of the bag holder and two, the practice of explosive power and technique on the part of the kicker. Thanks. Also if you do have people line up in formation for drills and bagwork does everybody including the children hold the bags, all belt levels, or just black belts? jamaica_power@hotmail.com _______________________________________________________________ Get Free Email and Do More On The Web. It has the meaning of each of our belts, and poomse's. Or maybe you knew how to play beforehand but it sure became very useful? Hoping most of you understand my question! Just having a little fun, is all. But actually I am curious. It's sort of like chopsticks. A good thing to know, is it not? jamaica_power@hotmail.com _______________________________________________________________ Get Free Email and Do More On The Web. A wife of a friend of mine (both martial artists) made a gift for another martial arts couple for their new baby. They made a "Baby Dobak." Way cute. Anybody else make one of these? I don't sew but I think that must be great to be able to do that. Lots of people like me would pay for something like this. jamaica_power@hotmail.com _______________________________________________________________ Get Free Email and Do More On The Web. Personally, they only serve to help show your progress/rank within the system. The belt itself has no "special meanings", no power, no mystique. I've seen a few freak when my belt touched the floor... they picked it up for me as if picking up something extremely valuable and fragile. I thought the guy was about to bow to it, worship it...??? >> I teach children and from the very beginning I teach them to respect the "belt" because it represents a lot of hard work and it changes as they change. It is not to be used as a weapon or a jump rope or for tug of war, or other games as who can snap their belt the loudest. If a child doesn't want to wear it or throws it on the floor, I'll gladly take it back. There is certain misconduct that my students are aware of that may cause them to lose their belts. All the children are always very excited about getting new belts or even a stripe (piece of tape on their belt). I teach in an elementary school gym program once a week. The students all wanted belts. They wear their belts on that day and behave differently when wearing the belt. At a karate birthday party one day I saw an instructor give his student a black belt for a day. I swear that belt must have had mystical powers. The child ran faster, kicked higher, punched harder, etc. than he ever had done before in class. You had to be there to understand how really >bad it was for me to do that. I've been taught that in a tournament, if the coach as much as opens his mouth, the competitor may get a 1/2 point warning. I think what you did was the right thing to do in that situation. The coach should have known better. Besides, he is showing his poor sportsmanship. Many years ago, I was in a tournament in Malaysia. Coaches were allowed to cheer for their competitor but not provide coaching. One of the coaches was a young black belt, coaching a colored belt. Most likely, in his excitement, he shouted repeatedly "Kill him! Kill him!" The Grandmaster presiding over the tournament heard this, and immediately halted the entire tournament. He briefly gave us all a lecture on sportsmanship and the proper competitive spirit. The offending BB quickly and politely bowed himself out of the ring. The fight resumes without incident (I don't remember who won but I think it was still the competitor with the chastised coach). Another true story from my limited supply of MA experience.
