I absolutely cannot imagine calling my instructor by his first name but I believe that an equally respectful atmoshpere can be maintained with all adults on a first name basis if everyone is maintaining respect regardless of the titles. In this a school owner of instructor sets the pace and example, as do others who have been part of the group for a time, and new members will pick up on it and exhibit the same sort of respect (or if the place is just not right for them they will leave). As for this earning respect thing, I believe many people get too hung up on that. The key is that treating someone who has "not earned respect" or "un-earned" it with civility is actually a form of self respect. Without self respect you cannot respect others. Cliche maybe but so true. This is something I did not truly understand until I spent a couple years trying to teach it to teenagers. Last week we were effected by the tornados that hit this part of the state. Our printer who does our program books lost his house and shop that was in it. The hotels that we used in the past were leveled. So many people were effected by this terrible event that we felt like we should do something to help. Choctaw Taekwondo will be donating all of the gate fees to help the people effected by the tornados on May 3. We will also have a donation jar for any one who wants to help more. Any gym who would like to help us collect is more than welcome to contact us. Contact choctkd@telepath.com or Seadoo76@aol.com for information. We will be giving the money to the Community Action Agency of Oklahoma County. They will use the money to help the people of this area who were effected by the tornados. ------------------------------ From: Date: Mon, 10 May 1999 21:23:00 -0500 Subject: the_dojang: Re: saying bye >background? Those that don't are mostly people who came from another school which closed, perhaps it was not part of their "culture" there. Since this idea as a fund raiser was mine I'll answer your quest= ion. = Yes I have organized many races. I have been in charge (seriously) over = 19 years of organizing Fun Runs/ 5 and 10K for a very large national health = and wellness organization, as well as many local events. I have it fine-tune= d to a science. I've done most of the work via long distance telephone calls = to the following cities: San Francisco, San Diego, Boston X3, Washington D.C. X2, San Antonio Texa= s, Chicago, Illinois and Minneapolis, MN to name a few. Once on-site I had to deal with other issues such as finding an exact mea= sured out path. Sometimes I was lucky to find a park or pre-measured runway ne= arby. Othertimes I had to use the old traditional pushmarker to make my own pa= th. = I then had to contact the various police departments to see if it get permission to have roads closed and police protection for traffic control= during the race. And of course the advertisements and sign up sheets and= collection of watches in the time predicted races. I usually scheduled these events and other aerobic activities for the a.m= =2E around 6:00 to 7:00 which most people enjoyed. It gave them time to get = back and shower and have breakfast and then attend the other activities which = I really think would also work well on a testing or tournament day. People usually block out the entire day anyway. I've arranged for the Tshirts and medals. I also did the time prediction= races and broke people down by gender and age group. I then did the post= sheets showing where everybody placed (and this was in the day's before t= he computer). My other point to this post that if anybody is interested in doing this I= would be happy to share my other experiences. jamaica.power@usa.net ____________________________________________________________________ Get free e-mail and a permanent address at http://www.netaddress.com/?N=3D= 1 ------------------------------ From: samiller@Bix.Com Date: Tue, 11 May 1999 08:57:05 -0400 (EDT) Subject: the_dojang: Re: V6 #253: how far? >Anyway, how far would you go when attacked? Talking the confrontation down is a good thing, provided that you remain aware enough to determine if you are being manouvered into a more vulnerable position in preparation for an attack. Tang Soo! In regard to the racial conflict in Kosovo of Yugoslavia, Croatian Taekwondo Federation stressed in its letter of March 29 they saw no problem in organizing the tournament, indicating that the town of Porec had never been in any kind of danger even in the times when Croatia was in war and occupied by Yugoslavia.
