There are two sayings: Winning isn't everything, and = Winning isn't everything, it is = the only thing. How do you train a competitor to be the best without emphasizing that it is important to win. How could you possibly get to the Olympics without that mindset? My reason for asking is this; I think one of the greatest setbacks I have seen in aspiring competitors in tournaments is their lack of sense of timing not just against another competitor but in pacing themselves within a match. Seems if they don't practice (at the home dojang) 1 minute fights and then a break, 3 minute rounds etc. or whatever your organization requires than when they get to a competitive match their fighting is significantly off as is board breaking when time is also a requirement. In a sense it is over before they begin. They are highly disoriented and I see this as a great disadvantage especially when the other competitor is quite comfortable with pacing themselves within the time limits. They know how to attack, they can almost feel how much time is left in the match, etc. I think this is very important and very critical to winning a match. Knowing how to pace yourself, when to attack, when to break, etc. jamaica_power@hotmail.com _______________________________________________________________ Get Free Email and Do More On The Web. Speaking of Taekwondo in the former Yugoslavia, were there Taekwondo Karate practitioners (or other Martial artists) in Kosovo before the Serbs began their campaign to clean out all the Albanians? If so, did any of them use their Karate or other Martial Arts skills against the Serb ethnic cleansers? ------------------------------ From: Timothy Bruening Date: Tue, 11 May 1999 17:27:08 -0700 (PDT) Subject: the_dojang: 8th Grade Decided Orange Belt In a message dated 5/10/99 11:24:32 AM Eastern Daylight Time, the_dojang-owner@hpwsrt.cup.hp.com writes:> > ><< Hello. How do Karate practitioners go about promoting freedom, justice, and world peace? As for me, I am a member of Abolition 2000, a coalition of over 1,000 organizations campaigning for a treaty, by the year 2000, providing for the abolition of nuclear weapons. Nearly 10 years after the end of the Cold War, the U.S. and Russia remain ready to launch more than 5,000 nuclear warheads on less than half-an-hour's notice, and nuclear missiles on subs can reach their targets in 15 minutes. Thus if either side's early warning system shows that nuclear missiles are on their way, military leaders and the country's leader have only a few minutes to determine if enemy missiles are really on their way and decide whether to launch their own missiles. This hair-trigger alert policy leaves the world vulnerable to an accidental nuclear war, especially with Russia and its military in chaos. Moreover, there is the possibility that the infamous Y2K bug will cause the Russian or the U.S. early warning system to falsely indicate an attack. This possibility has even the Pentagon worried. How can the U.S. and Russia continue to be one bad call away from a nuclear disaster? In January 1995, the world came within 4 minutes of nuclear war. When Russian radar picked up a U.S. science rocket launched from Norway, Russian military leaders thought at first that it was a U.S. ICBM with Russia's name on it. Boris Yeltsin's nuclear suitcase (which he would use to launch Russian missiles) was activated for the first time ever. It took Russian decision makers 8 minutes to realize that the U.S. wasn't attacking them. By that time, they were less than 4 minutes away from ordering a nuclear response. Thank God the U.S. and Russia weren't anywhere near a political confrontation at the time! Therefore, I have sent e-mails to President Clinton (1600 Pennsylvania Ave, Washington DC 20500; (202) 456-1111; president@whitehouse.gov) to urge him to take the following steps to reduce the risk of nuclear war: de-alert our missiles, remove the warheads from their delivery vehicles (missiles, subs, and planes), call on all the other nuclear nations to do the same, and call for a treaty to abolish nuclear weapons. I urge all Karate practitioners to do the same. ------------------------------ From: Date: Tue, 11 May 1999 19:16:10 -0700 (PDT) Subject: the_dojang: USNTF Champs Received in the mail... 7th United States National Taekwondo Federation Championships Radisson Hotel O'Hare 6810 N.
