What was the > injury? and What could have prevented it? Hmmmm, probably the worst that I've seen was at an open tournament (Bluegrass Nationals in Louisville, Ky). A guy did a jump rear leg roundhouse kick and landed badly. His knee kind of "came apart" and bent the wrong way. It was pretty nasty to see. Prevention: don't get too fancy (IMHO). > For myself, a recent training session had a person knocked out with a > punch to the nose (right between the eyes...). Broke his nose... I ate a ridge hand to the nose in a self defense exercise. It's the drill (I'm sure most of you have done it) with the "victim" in the middle of a circle of attackers and they come at him/her in a random order with a random attack. A guy came from behind and I just caught movement from the corner of my eye. I turned my head and saw him coming up behind for a bear hug so I ducked out to one side and spun....right into his hand which happened to be in a ridgehand like position. I heard/felt the nose go. In order to keep the contact as minimal as possible I sat down/back out of it and immediately asked if anyone had a towel. Before the towel made it back I was bleeding pretty well and trying not to get it on my uniform or the floor. After I got the bleeding to stop my wife (an EMT and med student at the time) took a look at it. When I asked how it looked her exact quote was (I'll never forget these words :) "It's kind of under your left eye." Since she had done this type of stuff before I had her set it while it was still "fresh". I ruined a mouthguard by biting through it. But I must say that she did a good job. Without looking closely at the bridge of my nose it's hard to tell it was broken. She even straightened it from the previous time it had been broken (in a wrestling tournament) and not set quite right. For prevention...hmmmmm. I guess we could have worn pads but that takes away some of the attacks and realistic nature of the drill. We could have gone a bit slower/softer but with the same result. Actually, I think it's just one of those things. I don't begrudge Tom (the attacker) anything and feel that it helped me in preparing for real life. Haa haa. Actually I rate USTU right up there in the category of "too many orgs". The USTU has plenty to offer, if you're an elite competitor or really into the tournament thing, but they lack a system to support non-compete schools. And they're (as a general rule) pretty pompous about what they do have. The "NGB" thing is fine, and alot of people hold on to that to give them a sense they're in the "right" organization. But the little squabbles about "we are more important than everyone else" really is kind of annoying, isn't it? It's actually a very petty statement, not that you were the first or last to say it, there will be more from both sides, probably till the end of time. This is actually the root behind my statement "there are too many orgs", I should clarify: "There are way too many orgs squabbling over the word "THE"" *THE* NGB *THE* National Championship *THE* traditional org *THE* original TKD *THE* first Kwan *THE* this and *THE* that. Ugh. Doesn't it ever get tiring trying to convince people you're the #1? It sure gets tiring hearing it. Anyone ever think there will ever be an end to this stuff? It really demeans us all. p.s. Unfortunately there is a lot of junk out there. But, I think we are blessed with multiple orgs because (although they don't admit it) they improve themselves by watching what others are doing. If the WTF (or whoever) were the *ONLY* TKD org around, where would they be? For example... WTF - got TKD into the Olympics - popularized it for all Jhoon Rhee - invented Safe-T gear (thankyou!) ITF/ATA/others - maintained point sparring - family oriented; strong kids programs Forms - several changes, improvements, etc. Each organization has its own strengths and weaknesses - some more than others. After reading all the postings about tournaments, judging, competition and such-----I'm glad the style of hapkido I practice doesn't do competitions. This has nothing to do with whether or not competitions are good, bad, useful, useless, or a handy energy sink for kids who have had too much sugar and caffiene----it simply has to do with the fact that since we don't do competitions, I don't have to worry about the above things. :) (Nor do I have to worry about coaching my students.) I'm quite happy about that----the self-defense aspects of hapkido are more than enough already to keep me completely occupied. Adding in competition aspects would probably put me over the edge. :) Thomas - -------------------------------- thomcat@radiks.net http://www.binary.net/thomcat "If you had another brain cell, you'd be halfway to a synapse." ------------------------------ From: Date: Thu, 13 May 1999 13:13:38 EDT Subject: the_dojang: Re: Thanks to Darlene et al I hope you will have the opportunity to share some of your responses on the digest! Have appt. with my GM in just a few hours to discuss the PHL of TKD, HKD and film him doing some forms. Also plan to include some Bruce Lee quotes w/out giving him credit.. till the end. I've visited several that advertise Hapkido on the door but mix it with TKD. In our dojang they are two distinct styles and I want to pursue HKD in the traditional style. Any recommendations on schools in the area I'm moving to? Thanks in advance.
