"are m.a. really an art?" It was much appreciated and really did jump start a discussion. Just so you know- You guys are right up there with the likes of Richard Anderson, renowned cultural anthropologist, in your def. of art. FYI his definition is "Art is culturally significant meaning, skillfully encoded in an affecting, sensuous medium." There is another cultural anthropology def. that has 5 sub-components; all of which the m.a. fit into. Email me for a copy if you want it. Also, you bright individuals tapped into beliefs held by Immanuel Kant (on the nature of genius) and John Dewey (on the true understanding of art being grounded in experience). Big round of applause for all of you. BTW, I got an "A" and that 'Masters of the M.A.' special from a year ago (Wesley Snipes) came in real handy! I only showed about six min. of it total but it ranged from Africa to Asia. AND...The BIG hit was the last statement of Bruce Lee's interview about expressing oneself honestly and not lying being a very hard thing to do. Dawne- done for the semester and doing the happy dance AND all the forms (HA- all 3 of them) I know in exultation :0) ------------------------------ From: Timothy Bruening Date: Sun, 16 May 1999 19:56:17 -0700 (PDT) Subject: the_dojang: International Taekwondo Council My Karate school, Rodness' Karate Center, is affiliated with the International Taekwondo Council. Our TKD master encourages us to write down goals (I wrote this one down two years ago when I started TKD), then frequently revisit them and expand them. I now realize that BB is not the end of the line, but the beginning. Our Master uses the analogy of the kup steps as the months of pregnancy, and the BB as the birth. We do not know all at birth, nor can we do everything. The BB is, like a newborn child, the beginning of further learning in TKD. I will be sure to let everyone know when I reach this first step in BBdom--probably next April. I don't think I'll be ready in October, and we only test twice a year for BB. I moved through the kup ranks pretty quickly, but I still have a lot to internalize (mostly forms and balance). One of our BBs celebrated her *50th* birthday with a black belt! Just want to tell you all to take a look at the new Karate/Kung Fu Illustrated when it hits the stands in the next week or so. (Aug. issue) Check out the article I wrote on training in Hapkido in Korea. Also, look for my Hapkido Hoshinsul video to be released by Paladin Press in November. There will be more article upcoming in Blackbelt, MA Training and other mags, so you'll see me out there. Our affiliation with our parent dojang and WTF-style TKD help promote what he already promotes. My question is this (multi-part): a) When someone is studying under another TKD instructor and comes to you to ask about your school, what do you say to them? b) What if you know the other TKD instructor's style? c) What if the other TKD instructor was taught by your instructor and has started his own school, yet does promotion tests with your school? d) What if you really don't approve of the other instructor's teaching skills (lack of role-modeling/or other factors) and they've asked you to compare the schools? In the past, I have talked about how much I enjoy my TKD school, the benefits I have realized from TKD at this school, the qualifications of my instructor, the balance of women:men in class, the days and times class meets, the cost, and the testing requirements. (Just the facts, ma'am.) The hard part is when they want you to compare it with the other school. I vaguely say that teaching styles vary; I know of others who have done well in the other dojangs; the location factor of being in town might be more important to some; I really like my school; etc. Finally, I just tell them that they should come observe a class and talk with my TKD master. What I really want to do is say: Hey! My school is the greatest! We have the best instructor who's a great role-model/teacher/parent/community member! Your kids will learn super social skills, values, and high standards! We have a lot of fun and work hard, too! Quit your school and come join ours!
