Has anyone ever seen any specialty TKD videos regarding coaching tips for heavyweight class TKD fighting? I think it would be fun to get some heavyweight black belts together and have a roundtable and maybe make one. Has anyone seen a similar video? I'd also like to hear if anyone has any thoughts even related to heavyweight division fighters. As an instructor/school owner... business seminars, networking, financial support, instructional skills development, personal training developments, new programs being developed for your use, help with school design and location, retirement programs, insurance programs, singular source of supplies (uniforms, gear, training books, training videos, certificates), some have placement services for new instructors looking for a job (you can hire qualified assistants if you can't wait to develop your own). As a student... Opportunities to train elsewhere (if you happen to move) without skipping a beat; local, regional, and national seminars taught by people you know and trust; schools with affiliations usually (but not always) have better facilities than independants; easier access to sources of information such as books/videos dedicated to your schools curriculum, visions of climbing the ranks to Master level and opening your own facility with ease through the help of the organization. But, if you find an independant school with a great facility, a qualified instructor, and you have no need of training elsewhere, or tournaments, then great. Go for it! Or, if you're an instructor with a business mind, exceptional physical skills, and a great instructional skills (it's hard to find anyone with all three!) and you want to make it on your own, then great for you! You may not need an organization to train, but it does have advantages outside of tournaments. My wife is telling me she is about to become a widow. My left leg buckled on me 7 weeks ago. The doctor treated me for a strained/torn medial collateral ligament (MCL) and my leg was placed into a cast. I also had a minor fracture of my right heel. The other day the cast was removed and I headed to a sports clinic because my leg did not feel right (sort of the sensation that the bottom half was/is not attached). I should have done this weeks ago. These doctors told me that my left MCL was torn and casting was the correct treatment. What was not treated was separated cruciate ligaments, both the ACL and PCL. I was thrilled to hear that! They also told me there are tears in my right ACL and MCL (old injuries-never treated). Now I was really overjoyed. I am taking physio now trying to get some/all of my flexibility and strength back. I have been told NO kicking, jumping etc. until I have a functional brace. The kicker is I had requested my black belt testing two days prior to the accident. The masters tested me last summer. I failed but I demonstrated that my nose block can block kicks and punches at almost any height. My sparring, defense, theory, teaching techniques were more than satisfactory. My forms were a different story. In November I was asked to try again. With a workload of more than a hundred hours a week I had not been going to classes on a regular basis. My life consisted of working, going home to change clothes and back to work. Physically and especially mentally I was not ready for the testing. I had a "discussion" with my instructor and I won; I did not test. I talked with the panel after the underbelt testing. They asked me why I did not want to test. They agreed with my reasoning and would allow me to request my promotion. They also said I could not put it off for long. I learned the forms I was missing; I got myself into better physical and emotional shape; I asked for a testing and promptly trashed my leg(s). My original goal was to make black belt before fifty. With that date only a few weeks away I have my doubts now. What has me worried now is that the masters think I should be tested by the end of June. I will have some changes made to my training. The kids say I look like Santa but my hair, what is left of it, is the wrong colour and I smell. I blame that on the manufacturer not making deodorants the way they did years ago. I could train to become a heavy bag or a floor mat. The kids and some not-so-kids have been using me as one for years. In any case things will work out. Maybe I'll switch to AIKENDO. I wonder if I am writing so I can avoid my stretching. Enough of this. Time to relurk and get back to the rack. Jan, my better half, says she has to help me no matter how much I hurt. (the fine print in our marriage contract) She also believes that if anyone else hurts me she gets to beat me when I get home because she is the only one allowed to hit me. (more fine print) To Darlene: Great goal. Keep at it.
