Hwa Rang Do translated means "The Way of the Flowering Manhood". It's a pretty good site. Thought I would share. If you're interested in martial arts articles go to the section at the top that says "MEDLINE" I did two separate searches one on "Martial Arts," and another on "Karate," both which retrieved different material. Each link takes you to an article abstract and more information if you want to retrieve the article. Good for a rainy day. There's quite a variety of subject matter out there. This is a sample of one abstract about a karate punch to the neck: Abstract A 43-year-old corrections officer developed right neck and posterior head pain following a karate punch to the right side of the neck during self-defense training. One week later, he developed an acute left hemiparesis. Magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated a right hemisphere cerebral infarction and absence of signal flow void in the right internal carotid artery. Carotid ultrasound demonstrated complete occlusion of the right internal carotid artery without evidence of atherosclerotic disease. Carotid occlusion with cerebrovascular infarction is a possible complication of martial arts training involving forceful blows to the neck. http://www.healthy.net/welcome/quick.htm jamaica _______________________________________________________________ Get Free Email and Do More On The Web. I think it means something like flowering manhood. Hmmm... I am sure the HRD guys could give an extemporaneous(?) essay on the subject. ------------------------------ From: Date: Thu, 20 May 1999 17:15:21 EDT Subject: the_dojang: Re: The_Dojang-Digest V6 #268 In a message dated 5/19/99 11:13:48 AM Central Daylight Time, the_dojang-owner@hpwsrt.cup.hp.com writes: << Hello, I am a Assistant Instructor in a Korean martial art, that is taught in a traditional manner. One of the first things that we teach is to always answer yes sir ,no sir or i don't know sir. As students are learning to deal with this we are very supportive and understanding, but by senior belt it is a given that you know how to answer. I just had a senior student tell me he was no longer coming to any of my classes because he was sick of having to do push-ups when he did not answer. I worked one on one with this student for over a year before I resorted to this measure. He always said he had a great class whenever I did not make him do any thing as a result of not answering. I am feeling bad about this and any "outlooks" on what I could have done better or what I did wrong would be great. Thank you in advance. Chris Porter. cmporter@webtv.net >> as someone who has had the same result... do not frett over one student... if you teach a traditional martial art.. and that is an understood means of answering,, then it is not your fault for making this student follow the rules. You would be more at fault if you DID NOT make this student follwo the rules and the rest of the class had to ... be confident in what you are doing,, it is the right thing, one student does not make you a bad instructor WriorDragn ------------------------------ From: "Jamaica Power" Date: Thu, 20 May 1999 14:24:23 PDT Subject: the_dojang: Dojang Digest Hats - Eric >>>Any way we can get together and/or Identify each other at the Meet?? >>>Eric Mueller>>> Well Eric, I think Ray should sell Dojang Digest hats (baseball style) so when people travel to tournaments they could wear them with their warmup suits. :) Something classy of course! That is of course for those of you that want to be identified. jamaica _______________________________________________________________ Get Free Email and Do More On The Web. Ronda Sweet ------------------------------ From: Date: Thu, 20 May 1999 18:24:19 EDT Subject: the_dojang: Re: The_Dojang-Digest V6 #268 As an assistant instructor you should be taking your cues from the head instructor. You shouldn't feel bad. Often an assistant instructor does not get the same respect from the students as the head instructor gets. Don't take it personally, just be patient. It take a lot of work on your part to gain the same respect. Now if push ups didn't work, instead of just keep giving push ups use a different tactic. The purpose is to change his behavior, not to build resentment. Sometimes I ask the rest of the class, "How should he answer?" or "What is the correct response?" and the other students help him to remember. Sometimes with little kids I make believe I don't hear him or surely he was addressing me. I don't know how old you are or how old that student is. I don't think you did anything wrong, in fact I think your concern shows you are doing everything right. ------------------------------ From: Date: Thu, 20 May 1999 18:30:57 EDT Subject: the_dojang: Re: The_Dojang-Digest V6 #268 Teaching Sorry, Chris, I forgot to add "Teaching" to the Subject: I am new at this.
