According to my Kyo Sa Nim Emma MacPherson, Master C.S. Kim came to the U.S. with others to help set up a US Tang Soo Do Moo Duk Kwan Federation. He was the President/Chairman of that organization for some years and then in 1984 left that organization and formed the International Tang Soo Do Federation. Although Master C.S. Kim was president/chairman of the US Tang Soo Do Federation, an organization under Grandmaster Hwang Kee, Master C.S. Kim's instructor is actually Grandmaster Song Ki Kim of World Tang Soo Do Union in Korea. Kwan Ja Nim C.S. Kim is Kyo Sa Nim Greg and Emma MacPhersons' instructor, and I am lucky to have such a short lineage to my grandmaster. I have taken a seminar taught by Kwan Ja Nim, and I don't think I have ever met anyone with more charisma and energy. I was totally awestruck by him. It has all the Pyung Ahns, Chil Sungs, Bassai, Naihanchis, Ro Hai (sp?) and a few others that I haven't come close to performing myself! When compared to Hwang Kee's books it falls miserably short on detail and added extras (I'd ignore the few paragraphs on TSD history; the family tree of TSD might be interesting though), but since it's so much cheaper, who cares :-). It's perfect as an aide memoir for going through forms in your armchair while drinking a cup of tea. The effort was apparently begun somewhere around Pennsauken, NJ, not very far from Philadelphia. If that history is even approximately true, it would certainly account for the relatively high concentration of TSD schools in Pennsylvania and NJ. Of course, what we're taught and/or my interpretation of it could be erroneous. Comments or corrections, Master Hancock? >I do find it interesting that they are both based in Pennsylvania though: >GM Shin in Philly, and GM Kim near Pittsburgh.
