Yes... a while back an instructor from another Korean martial art style came into my school and asked me to teach him (for free) Kuk Sool's first sword form (Juhng Guhm Hyung). I explained that he would have to enroll as a regular student and learn the prerequisite material first -- roughly a year or so of training. He then explained back to me that he didn't need all "that basic stuff" because he was such-and-such-muckity-muck in martial art "x" and that he would be glad to pay me to teach him just the parts of KSW that he wanted to know. I smiled, told him "no" and showed him the exit. End of saga. Make sure you are not being recorded. Just kidding. I was wondering, all these questions, are they things you have deal with, or just curious about, or do you feel a duty to keep the list traffic up? ------------------------------ From: "Lasich, Mark D." Date: Fri, 28 May 1999 08:10:21 -0400 Subject: the_dojang: Re: Blocking vs. attacking Hmmmm, I guess I have a completely different philosophy: A block is a misdirection of a technique. If you block and the attackers technique misses you by 1/2" or 5" you have successfully blocked! Now, as for blocking hard? Other than wearing yourself out, you run the risk of "over-committing" the block, so your guard may not be up and ready for the next technique coming in! "Punch the attackers striking limb" - are we street fighting, or sparring here? Seriously, if you are trying to get the upper hand and win at all costs, this is a good concept. BUT, I would rather win a *sparring match* by having good, fast techniques, and not by simply beating up my "PARTNER". Funny thing about the "sportsman-like conduct" concept: ATA rules would have penalty points awarded to the attacker if the defender keeps deliberately striking hard like this. It keeps the integrity level up, and seperates the street fighter from the Martial Artist - IMHO. Thoughts? In the spirit of TKD... mark.lasich@alcoa.com ------------------------------ From: samiller@Bix.Com Date: Fri, 28 May 1999 09:04:40 -0400 (EDT) Subject: the_dojang: Re: V6 #280: white knights talking backwards Well, in the case of Schwartzenegger, I did see references several years ago to the health problems he experienced because of his former life style, which included the use of anabolic steriods. If I recall correctly, his "normal" BP had reached some astronomical figure like 250/150 at one point. At the time, there didn't seem to be any reluctance on his part to discuss the issue. However, interviews with Big Stars are very managed affairs, well-scripted by managers and PR people. That's probably where the filters are applied to suppress this kind of information. >They tell our children "Not to do Drugs." That drugs are harmful and can >hurt you. Except for one thing. They certainly occur at all ages and each gender. You have the little munchies that latch on to the instructor and when there are lots of other children in class how do you acknowledge this young creature while giving due time to the other students. Some of these little people latch on quite physically like little puppy dogs at your heals. They are often frequently little chatter boxes both in and outside of class. Then you have the older students that try to make an impression and have their own unique ways of trying to be teachers pet. Sometimes boundaries are crossed. Sometimes there are misinterpretations of actions which have can have dire consequences both for the instructor and the student.
