I was wondering, all these questions, are they things you have deal with, or just curious about, or do you feel a duty to keep the list traffic up? Dylan ==================================================== Seriously... and not joking. Every post is something that I have personally experienced although I obviously turn them into questions instead of always posting my own experiences. If it seems like a lot of experiences...well I have been around for a long time. It's called aging :) Duty to keep up the list traffic... Nope...Not at all. Ray's list. No obligations. If I wanted to do that I'd start my own forum. Hokey as it is I have enjoyed the company of the people on forums. Actually in a very short time you probably won't hear from me much on this forum since I am moving on to new territories and experiences. It's been a pleasure meeting all of you. jamaica _______________________________________________________________ Get Free Email and Do More On The Web. I'm a yellow belt and have been practicing since January of this year with my six year old daughter. I find Tae Kwon Do very rewarding and enjoy having something special that we can do together, but I am having trouble catching on to new kicks and forms. I would love some suggestions on things I could practice on at home and some good books that would show forms and different techniques to help me improve. I would also love to hear some stories of when you all started martial arts so I wouldn't feel all alone in my fumbling beginnings!! :) Aimee Wilson 8th Gup World Tae Kwon Do Federation Fort Worth, TX USA ------------------------------ From: Date: Fri, 28 May 1999 11:17:44 EDT Subject: the_dojang: Re: C.S. How hot was it? Here in Maryland we only had one (maybe?) fan, but the Gym had BIG doors on either side that could be opened to allow a Breeze - of course they didn't open them until well after they stopped collecting spectators fees. I was not uncomfortable, but I was not running around a ring in Hogu or shirt & tie either..... > > > 2. We took donations for the Junior Team and still made almost $900 on > donations alone. > I agree, Parents (me) pay an awful lot for the sport. I also recognize the need to earn $$ for the State Organization. How about give one (or two) free spectator passes for each competitor? That way at least one parent could afford to attend, and the State Organization could generate some reasonable revenue from families that bring Grandparents, Aunts Uncles Friends etc. Better yet - how about Spectator vouchers (or an extra spectator voucher) for each Pre Registered competitor?? That might act as an incentive for competitors to register early. > > 3. Family discounts? Yes or no? Yes within reason - see my previous comments > > > 4. Opening ceremonies? > VERY ABBREVIATED ! 1. I think the National Anthem is a must. 2. I think you should Identify/Introduce The Tournament Officials, AND Referees and Judges. I think the Officials and competitors/spectators are due the courtesy of an Introduction, However this introduction should be very Brief i.e: "Tournament Director, Master Ronda Sweet, Oklahoma State President; .....Referee- Mr. Charlie Tuna, 3rd Dan" Sometimes the Introductions seem too much like ego stroking (or butt-kissing) for my taste....." Mr. Charlie Tuna, 3rd DAn Kukkiwon, studied under Greatest Grandmaster Obi-wan Yoda, four hundred time World Champion, blah, blah, blah" > 5. Demos? No. The only Demo I want to see is the competitors competing. If I want to see a Demo, I will go to a Demo. Don't waste Valuable tournament time on non-competition frivolity. Only exception should be if you want to have some SHORT Demo thing during the "Lunch" break between Forms and Sparring (assuming there is a break - and you don't have a breaking or creative forms competition) btw - the child care idea and equipment check ideas were great - imo - but no > one would do them because of the liability. a sign of our times I guess. I would be reluctant to Check my son's equipment - the uncertainty of whether it would get lost just when we need it would add too much to my (already heightened) stress level. I can understand the problems with the Daycare Idea - I think the Concept is Great, but again the Parents may be reluctant to leave baby with an unknown, and the daycare personnel I am sure would have to have parents sign pages of Legal Stuff..... How about a "Fenced in" area with lots of Soft Pads where parents can take their cranky / hyperactive / bored little ones to play for a little while? At the venue we frequently utilize there are a bunch of Pads piled up in a corner, and the Kids invariably gravitate to that area..... How about a "Tournament Program" with info for spectators (Like Jr. Safety rules, how the competitions are scored etc.). You could also include a "fill in the blank" bracketing / score sheet for parents to document their kids competition(s) and a couple of photo sized blank areas for parents to paste photos of their kids competitions / medal stand pictures. I think it would make a nice memento. Hopefully it could be made relatively inexpensively, and whatever cost could be defrayed by spectator fees and / or nominal fee for the program. You could also sell advertising space to participating Dojangs, (although this might present an ethical conflict for certain events) As a parent I would love it , I have often 'scrounged' for extra flyers announcing the tournaments - as a keepsake; as a spectator I would appreciate the info provided and the time saved from the 'opening ceremonies'. ------------------------------ From: "Jamaica Power" Date: Fri, 28 May 1999 11:54:43 PDT Subject: the_dojang: Hermit Kingdom This is just one of those FYI things I do.
