Was going to execute 3 different breaks. First one was an elbow strike into 3 boards, next a back spinning kick into 3 boards, and then a knife hand into one. Everything was set. All the boards set up in the right place with the board holders. The BB panel was all set to watch me as was my instructor and GM. They were directly in front of me. And I take a deep breath, focus, put arms up for the elbow strike and my instructor stops me, shakes his head and says not to do it. The GM looks at me and says do it. Just like that. During my days/years I have had the normal bruises, 3 broken ribs, a fractured sternum and a smooshed spine and pelvic area. Hmmmmm. Anyway if you know a student is injured would you make them wait until the next test, administer a test which didn't affect their injured part, or anything else? jamaica _______________________________________________________________ Get Free Email and Do More On The Web. I would advise the teenager in Jamaica's scenario to find another dojang. And I would leave with her. The master instructor's behavior was intolerable. I agree with the notion that the behavior of the students reflects the teaching of the master. A head instructor who would permit any teacher to be treated with disrespect deserves no loyalty or respect. To treat an instructor of any age in such a patronizing and condescending way is inexcusable. Students must respect the instructor that you place before them. Age and sex have nothing to do with it. We regularly have young teachers in our school. Teaching others is considered part of our own training. We begin formally teaching others in small groups at about the 6th gup level. By the time we reach 2nd gup, we are expected to able to lead an entire class. Black belt teens regularly assist adult instructors during classes and are often called upon to lead the entire class -- sometimes with supervision, sometimes not. One of our senior instructors happens to be the son of a close friend of mine from high school. In other words, he is in the same generation as my own children. He is about 25 years younger than I, but I can not imagine treating him with anything but the respect that his rank (Sam Dan) and position as instructor demand. He began training at 6 years old and recently mentioned that he taught his first adult class when he was only 12 years old. Although he said that he was scared to death, I would bet that he didn't show it. I am equally sure that the adult students treated him with the same respect that they would have shown our head instructor. It is a lesson that we are constantly taught. Students behave in the way that is expected of them. Demand respect and the students will behave respectfully. Tolerate disrespect and you will get it. Disrespectful students should be reprimanded and, if they fail to modify their behavior, they should be asked to leave the dojang. Similarly, if disrespect is tolerated by the master, the student teacher should leave. BTW, I should mention that 16-year-olds are considered adults at our school. Anyone 16 or older can receive a key to the dojang so they can come in and train at any time. I wonder how many other schools respect and trust their teenage students that much... ~John Franich ------------------------------ From: "J. Wow! I wonder if the variations go the other way, too. If I could find a source for bricks that only require 12 pounds of force, I'd place a HUGE order!!! Hmmm. ...
