One suggestion is: Kim's Tae Kwon Do 361 Castro St Mountain View, CA 94041 (650) 964-0915 It is a small studio, but they have a Ssaurabi machine there. Master Kim is a 9th degree (that's what it sez on the window). A friend of mine at work got his 4th degree there a few years ago, and used to be a part-time instructor there. I don't know if he still teaches there. I will look for these at our bike shop here in town. Didn't know they existed and glad to know they do !!! Back when I was alot younger ... I used to love to ride bikes ... now I can again !! Thanks! After 4 stripes, (and after sucessfully demonstrating the combinations and forms required to advance to the next rank), they were given one wide black stripe to indicate they were ready to test for the next rank at the next scheduled gup test. >> We do something similar to this. We put on a yellow stripe to indicate they have memorized the required Student Principles and School Rules for their belt level .... a green stripe to indicate 4 good To Do Lists turned in (indicating that everything at home and school is hunky dory) .... and a blue stripe for every form they need to do for their belt rank (and as they climb the up the levels ... the forms must look better and better before they get that stripe for it!). When they have those stripes ... then they are ready to be considered for a belt test. We look over all their techniques they need to know ... give them a small pretest ... indicate where they need to work more on ... and then give them a test notice. Pre-tests are 3-4 weeks before a test time. Test notices are like 2-3 weeks away from testing time .... time for them to really push on getting everything alot better. I like your GM's system tho .... gets me to thinking ........... mmmmmmm...... It would restrict the movement of the kicker. Consequently during competition the kicks might be aimed and/or timed incorrectly due to the differences in the training vs the competition Hogu 2. The extra padding would give a false sense of security and comfort to the recipient of the kick which would under prepare him for the feel of real competition. (granted the Training Hogu are used for Hogu drills). In short, my son felt the benefits of "Training Like you compete" outweigh the safety & comfort benefits of the extra padding & extra coverage for training. What think You ?? >> Your son would probably be correct if only the training hogu was used by everyone all the time when training. However, in my son's sparring class, there are times when the instructor wants people to know how it feels to kick someone properly with full power. For those times, the kickee wants plenty of padding. The class also has people of many different levels of expertise, and all ranks from yellow belt to black. The younger and/or lighter people wear two hogu when fighting with older and/or heavier people. Extra padding helps to balance them out. Following hogu drills, there IS a period of sparring while wearing regulation competition gear. Also, occasionally a parent or spectator will volunteer to be the "kicking dummy" and the training hogu is a good protection for the volunteer. Another point to consider might be that in hogu drills, there is sustained hitting to the body of a relatively steady target. In the competition ring, this would rarely happen. I can see the benefits, but agree that balancing the drills with regular sparring time would be very important.
