If you live in the area, an address and phone number would be >extremely helpful. Another school in the area is Hwarang Kwan TKD, run by Grandmaster Shin and several of his black belts. They teach TKD on MW 7-8, Hapkido TTh 7-8, F sparring 6-7:30. The Hapkido instructor, John Lee, is an excellent teacher. He is very clear and helpful. It's located on 133 Roosevelt Ave., Redwood City, not far from Palo Alto. The cross street is El Camino Real, phone: (650) 368-5659. It's located behind Roosevelt Liquors and next to a skateboard store. There's also a Gracie Jujitsu place on El Camino, Mountain View. I know there are a few lurkers here who have taken classes at that studio. If your student will be doing anything for Stanford University, there are many martial arts organizations on campus. You will need affiliation with Stanford to be able to take any of those classes. Extra padding helps to balance them out. Following hogu drills, there IS a period of sparring while wearing regulation competition gear. Also, occasionally a parent or spectator will volunteer to be the "kicking dummy" and the training hogu is a good protection for the volunteer. >> A young lady in our old dojang sidekick an older gentleman in the a sparring session and broke one of his ribs. He was very surprised. He was under the mistaken notion that a hogu would protect him whenever he would get kicked so he hadn't learned how to absorb kicks and punches ... he would kinda lean into them and take it like a man. Wrong. He knows better now. :-) We spar with them when it gets hot and heavy and we want to go harder (must be agreed upon by the two sparring partners) and we take them off when we spar with control and work on footwork and other things.
