Any organization built up by people who deliberately choose to have no affiliation, should be considered for renegade-hood. One of his stands, which make me wonder about his maturity, is his stand on the development on tkd. In my opinion, the difference between a master and a grandmaster, is the level of maturity. He says that he focuses on traditional tkd and that tkd should never change. How can he say that about an art that what was developed over 2 decades (he singled out in the early seventies) ? He also uses the first 20 chang hun forms that was developed by one man over a couple of years in the 60's. What does that have to do with tradition? tkd's only tradition, and that goes for both ITF and WTF, is that of change and evolution. To hold on to a snapshot of that evolution and claiming to hold on to "traditions" is ridiculous. That was definitely an experience I consider worthy of sharing with you guys. So take a listen... while I had lived in Seoul before, I never had the opportunity to go to the Kukkiwon. And let me tell you, the rules for traveling in Seoul (or Korea in general) still apply: 1a.) Leave as early as possible if riding in a sedan because you can't park in the parking lot at Kukkiwon--only the Bongo vans are allowed. 1b.) If you're riding in a Bongo van, leave considerably early, but not as early as you would riding in a sedan. YOu still need to get there before they start otherwise... you're S.O.L. 2.) Ladies and gents, please carry with you some napkins. They don't provide toilet paper in the restrooms. 3.) Still pertaining to restrooms: If you must change and don't want to see other people "flapping about," change into your dobok pants at least or change in the restroom nearest the gift shop. 4.) Carry plenty of won. I don't think they take dollars. 5.) Make sure somebody in your group understands Korean. The group I travelled with left at about 0800, so we got there in about 10-20 minutes. Completely neat. GM Kim took Chamsu bridge and from there, I stopped paying attention... however, I know we ended up in the general vicinity of Kangnam Station. Cho-dan testing started at about 0900 after some words from the gentleman at the microphone and the Korean national anthem. I think Sunday there were about 300 people testing for cho-dan. The size of the pit itself is considerable, and the arena seating was pretty decent. There's no a/c or heat, so temperatures can get a little extreme. It was overcast, so that really made a difference. I think 5 or 6 people tested for cho-dan, and one for sam-dan. Needless to say, cho-dan testing was over by about 1030-1100. Standard procedure looks like this: your number group is called; you check off for your number, you line up for forms and do any two that are called (il-pal jang; favorites were i and oh-jang), then proceed to one of the three sparring rings and get paired up with someone close to your height. YOu spar for up to a minute because it's based on technique. If you're overmatched, you get 20 seconds of sparring time max. The majority of people testing for cho-dan looked about my age, mid-teens to early-20s, with a couple of people in their 30s and 40s. I didn't get to see the i-dan group because I had to leave shortly after cho-dan testing was finished. The quality of techniques went from sharp to questionable, in both poomsae and gyoroogi. An interesting thing to note is that you must have a black v-neck. Two girls had the poom v-necks, but they had to get some black tape put over the red striping. you must have a black v-neck when you go there for testing!!! As far as sparring went, don't follow what your opponent does. These two girls went back and forth just trading kicks... one girl did three, the other did three. The referee stopped and went ot the judges' table, and after a minute he went back and told the girls to free spar. After that, there was no set pattern of repetition. I definitely changed my mind about testing in early spring... a group of blue belts a step behind me are going in January, so I'm considering going then. AFter seeing some people Sunday, I'm a little more reassured in my training. The other question: How do I cancel getting the Digest from one account and put it towards another? Hotmail has been acting considerably goofy with my mail.
