I didn't think a ligament or tendon >tear would heal w/o surgical repair.?.?. My doctor made that educated guess based on what the fact that I heard a "Pop" when I hurt myself, and that I had some pain on the side of my knee. Then he said something about how amazing the body is at healing itself so I'm hoping that means that the remainder of my ligament will either get stronger, or somehow heal itself. I recently called him up to get the results of my X-Rays, and basically, he told me that he didn't find anything to worry about. Perhaps that "pop" was a result of something more minor givign way. Anyway, I'm taking the time off to let my knee heal since it has not healed completely since the original injury last October. Kamsa Hamnida. Aimee, It just depends on the determination to train and study and the time you have. My instructor has been in this since he was 19 yrs of age. He is now 41 and only a 4th dan. My GM recieved his 9th dan not too long ago. He is in his late 50's or early 60's. I know wtf schools shoots first dan out very quickly like within a year or two where in my federation it takes four to six years to reach first dan. To get to second dan you train 2 yrs. so on and so fourth..It is going to take me another year or year and a half to reach first dan myself. I just recieved 3rd gup. 2nd gup test will not be until nov-dec. I tore my collateral ligaments too many times 25-30 years ago(judo, skiing). My doctor convinced me to cease and desist from those activities by threatening/promising to put me into a body cast for 6 to 8 months. I walked with the aid of two full length leg braces for the next 2.5 years. My knees have been weak since then. I cannot do side splits or any other high knee stress activities without my knees giving out on me. I have learned my limitations, more or less. So why am I continuing with M.A.? (Could be masochism, senility, second or third childhood, love of learning etc.; take your pick) :v) Back on topic: If the ligament is only torn it will do its best to repair itself. If it is severed you are out of luck. At the end of March I had a setback in the dojo. I hyperextended my left knee and tore the medial collateral ligament and fractured my right heel. I also snapped both cruciates in my left knee. My left knee/leg is very flexible now by the way. I decided to cancel my request for my black belt test. The doctors told me the other collateral ligaments have scar tissue and are not as strong as they should be. What did surprise me was that the posterior cruciate ligament is gone from my right knee, possibly from as long ago as my judo days. There is no remaining sign of the PCL in the knee. The doc told me you can function without the cruciates. In any case I see the surgeon in the beginning of July and I'll see what happens then. I can htmlize it later. Folks, I really would like to add more style descriptions to the KMA FAQ. I've already updated parts of it, added a very short history of Korea section, and a style desc for Han Mu Do. For some reason the spacing shows slightly differently between IE on the Mac vs. Netscape on Unix or IE on Windoz. ?? Others care to contribute?
