Smith" Date: Sun, 27 Jun 1999 08:15:31 -0500 Subject: the_dojang: re: DD #323 titled: Practice posted by TKDTIGER/Also book recommendation Visualization is an interesting phenomenon. I once had to give a TKD breaking demonstration at a college event. The night before, I dreamed I did a completely different demonstration than the one planned. The dream demo involved breaking concrete slabs held suspended-style (dangling), something I had never done. The feeling of the techniques in the dream was so realistic! I changed my plans, did the demo per my dream, and succeeded. I also find that visualizing my training regimen during the day (I don't make my living teaching) can help me perform better. Other topic: I was shown a good book yesterday by a friend, and I want to pass on my recommendation. The book is "Deadly Karate Blows: The Medical Implications" by Brian Adams. Publisher is Unique Publications, Inc., 4201 Vanowen Place, Burbank, CA 91505. Stock number is 312. ISBN is 0-086568-077-9. Very credible information including demo photos, medical drawings, and lots of causation and outcomes explanations. Also some treatment information. Sorry if these > questions are elementary, I've always been curious about the time table and > requirements on the high level belts. > It depends on the organization. In the ATA, we have to wait a minimum number of years equal to our rank. 1st Degrees wait one year, 2nd Degrees wait two years, etc. In addition, to test for 3rd Degree and above, there are other requirements that the candidate has to meet in order to get permission to test. ------------------------------ From: Chuck Sears Date: Sun, 27 Jun 1999 13:41:55 -0500 Subject: the_dojang: Re: The_Dojang-Digest V6 #326 > > > From: Timothy Bruening > Date: Sat, 26 Jun 1999 15:23:01 -0700 (PDT) > Subject: the_dojang: Breaking Wooden Boards and Trees > > How many wooden boards are broken by Karate practitioners each year? I would estimate that the total board feet broken in one year's time might be enough to fill up my garage and then some. A lot of folks these days are using the rebreakable plastic boards to cut down on costs, because they can be rebroken several hundred times, and buying several hundred wooden boards costs big bucks these days. The plastic boards do require a slightly higher level of skill because you have to hit them right on the dividing line or they won't go. However, there's just something about the wooden boards - that crack when they go and the splinters flying..... Besides, you could bring the broken pieces home and burn them in the fireplace. Those plastic boards *stink* if you do that.... ------------------------------ From: Paul Rogers Date: Sun, 27 Jun 1999 17:33:23 -0500 Subject: the_dojang: Re: The_Dojang-Digest V6 #324 > From: ATATKD@aol.com > I heard from another ATA Instructor that [Senior Master Allemeier] didn't break > with his round kick. > Is this > true?? I don't know because I wasn't there! Was it a regular round kick or > was it > off some special combination he broke with?? I spoke with someone who was there, and he says that S.M. Allemeier did an impressive break: double kick in the air, landing with a hammer fist onto another board, then breaking 6 concrete slabs with a palm heel strike.... Not every man truly lives." - BRAVEHEART Hi Folks. So many of you have given generously to this effort. Nedzad and Anela are most grateful for all you've given so far. As the Internet Martial Arts Community, collectively we seem to be able to gather enough items every 3-4 months to ship to Sarajevo. It's that time again! Please consider sending your previously worn uniforms, MA books, training materials, or equipment to Sarajevo, Bosnia. In particular, Nedzad and Anela of Sarajevo have requested more training books and videos and re-breakable boards. Small size uniforms would be useful to them as well. Please reply to this email directly if you would like to donate. The URL below is a link to letters and photos from our friends in Sarajevo. The young studs and studettes may go a little more quickly, but I've seen 4 - 5 years as typical, depending of course on how much you can train and how your body holds up. At about 10 boards per year, I guess I go through a massive 8 feet annually. Since I break pine that is nominal shelving lumber, I'm confident that all the wood I break is grown on a Georgia-Pacific or Weyerhauser tree plantation. I probably go through more board feet of wild hickory in my smoker than that;>) === Tang Soo! Scott "In Germany they came first for the Communists, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Communist.
