"McDojangs" exist in many (most? all?) organizations unless the people in charge keep things tight. One of the things people don't like about the ITF is that sometimes they can be rather heavy-handed about dictating to instructors what they should teach, how they should teach it, etc. OTOH, the ITF keeps to pretty high standards. One of the things people don't like about the WTF is that they sometimes don't say _anything_ about what instructors should teach, and so forth. Which is why there seems to be a large variation in the experiences people have with the WTF. OTOH, there's less hassle for instructors to join. Which way is better? The debate rages on. I do think that the different approaches to standardization (approximately, ITF=strict, WTF=relaxed) say something about the differing philosophies of the two organizations. - -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dave Steffen Wave after wave will flow with the tide Dept. of Physics And bury the world as it does Colorado State University Tide after tide will flow and recede steffend@lamar.colostate.edu Leaving life to go on as it was... - Peart / RUSH "The reason that our people suffer in this way.... is that our ancestors failed to rule wisely". -General Choi, Hong Hi ------------------------------ From: "A. Boyd" Date: Mon, 28 Jun 1999 23:54:12 -0700 (PDT) Subject: the_dojang: The path less travelled... Ok, in the tradition of the incomparable Jamaica I thought I would pose a question. I can only hope it can be as engaging. How do you balance the desire to teach with the necessities of life? This question is a little large to properly get a grip on so please bear with me for a moment... If you are the head instructor of a school, how did you get to that position? Did you plan to be an instructor from early in your training or did you wake up one morning and realize you had more degrees than limbs and perhaps you should share something before you were buried under the weight of ancient lore? Has your attitude toward teaching as a career changed since you began? Have you moved from smelly gym basements where you taught for free (or cost) to spacious 'training centers' carrying your name? Have you done the reverse (shaven head optional)? If you are training now with intent to be an instructor in the future, what steps are you taking now to realize this plan? Which direction to you wish to take at this point - profit or non-profit? For those of you who teach and make their living doing so, how significant are the challenges to opening and maintaining a school? Did you encounter lots of legal and financial pitfalls? Are their significant differences between running a school in the USA, Canada or Europe... or anywhere else for that matter? For those of you who teach in dank dungeons on campus or in community centers and make your living elsewhere, what obstacles do you face from your host or facility co-ordinator? I think I will pause here and see if there are any ripples in the pond. === Anthony BT Boyd: Swordsman and English Teacher For illumination on this curious occupation please follow this link: http://victorian.fortunecity.com/operatic/739 _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
