Seriously, I > think that board breaking can get to be mostly for show, anyway. Well, yes, people do a lot of demonstrations with board breaking, and many of them are ridiculous. Also, many of them are fake - as a physicist-in-training, I rather specialize is pointing this kind of think out. ;-) But don't knock board breaking. It's an excellent test of skill and power. Its psychological aspects are even more important. > One of the things I like about combat hapkido is learning to do arm > bars and wrist locks where you can cause considerable pain and > disability without necessarily having to break anything. Well, right, if you're studying Hapkido then breaking boards probably isn't very important. If, on the other hand, you're studying Taekwon-Do (which, to be honest, was designed to destroy your opponent), it's an important aspect of the art. True, it does use up wood. OTOH, I end up with a lot of kindling (which I always need more of), so it doesn't go to waste. (I also recycle every scrap of paper that comes across my desk, just on general principle.) It's also expensive, but then, education ain't cheap. ;-) Now, all I need to do is find a way to recycle broken bricks... ;-) - -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dave Steffen Wave after wave will flow with the tide Dept. of Physics And bury the world as it does Colorado State University Tide after tide will flow and recede steffend@lamar.colostate.edu Leaving life to go on as it was... - Peart / RUSH "The reason that our people suffer in this way.... is that our ancestors failed to rule wisely". -General Choi, Hong Hi ------------------------------ From: MissIllona@aol.com Date: Sat, 10 Jul 1999 00:35:39 EDT Subject: the_dojang: Re: The_Dojang-Digest V6 #345 In a message dated 7/9/99 4:46:46 PM Pacific Daylight Time, the_dojang-owner@hpwsrt.cup.hp.com writes: << Don't break a board - Save a tree >> Well, when we break boards ... they don't go into the trash can ... they get donated to anyone who wants them for their fireplaces for the wintertime. They have made alot of amazing, very pretty and versatile things with what was left over. If you are in hapkido, you definitely should go to any Small Circle camps in your area. Does anybody here do Danzan-ryu jujutsu as well? How close is that to Small Circle? Hello all my fellow Digest neophytes! HEHE. I'M BAAACCCK!! Anyone miss me? My computer has been down. Hope I've got the problem fixed now. Boy...two weeks without the thing and I was in withdrawal bad! Ha! When I got it on last night....I had 112 e-mail messages waiting for me. YIKES!! Anyway....for those who wrote to me about an investment....and you can send me personal e-mail about this (please do...I lost all the data and don't have your e-mail addresses anymore)....I did find a financial backer for my school. As a matter of fact...I'm writing this now from my new office at AMERICAN DRAGONS Martial Art Learning Center (115 S. Main St., Russellville, KY). So...I won't be needing the investments....but I do want to sincerely thank you for believing in me enough to say you would buy shares. If you are ever in KY...please do come visit me in Russellville. OK....I'd join in the ongoing discussions...but I've got some catch up reading to do.....and not a lot of time (been putting in 16 hour days the last two weeks trying to get this school ready). Just a quick byte....RENEGADE!?? Who...ME?!! Yep...that would be a classification I would fall under without a doubt. If you had to name my school according to the Korean tradition...it would be called Mei Yong Kwan. I don't do Pyong Ahn forms anymore.....I finally joined my Sim Do Kwan training with my Moo Duk Kwan training....and a pinch of Tai Chi...a dash of Wing Chun...etc...etc...etc. The result is a new style I guess....the American Dragons' style. But...and I like this word...I do teach "classical" hyung.......as well as some more modern inventions (such as my Sam Ship Soo and Ship Pal Tae forms). I am now using the four Sim Do Kwan forms in place of the five Pyong Ahns. They are: Han Soo (Korean Hand), Pyoi Soo (Hidden Hand), Sal Su (Deadly Hand) and Shin (Spirit). SIm Do Kwan Hyung are rather unusual. They are drawn off the Pyong Ahn, Kong Sang Koon, Nae Bu Jin series...but also have Yudo throws in them. Ever see anyone practice a form and do moves as if they were doing reaps and throws....yep...looks odd at first...but it is helpful and useful. In some regards...it is like walking through the motions like some Aikidoist do. So...I'm a RENEGADE. Yeah...yeah...whatever. Here's a renegade for you. Hwang Kee.....founded one of the largest schools in Korea and only studied less than two years under an instructor. Gen Choi Hong Hi....had a second degree black belt in Karate and founded the Tae Kwon Do movement. OOOO....here's a good one.....Funakoshi Ginchin....yep....dramatically changed the way Okinawa Kara Te was practiced and created the Shotokan school. OOOOOHHH B)Y! Then there is Karate Sagugawa himself....who only trained little over two years under KuSanKu before beginning to develop his new art....which became the forerunner of all the SHORIN Karate systems. Renegades all. Well....at least I'm in good company.
