Hi Dakin, as you no doubt know, Prof. Jay was one of GM Okazaki's (sp?) (the founder of Danzan Ryu) students in the ~'30s. Prof. Jay was also a friend (and training partner back in Hawaii) of Prof. Sig Kufferath, the head of Danzan Ryu that very recently left us. From what little I know of both systems, Prof. Jay strongly based his system on the Danzan Ryu basics. Perhaps of interest.?. I was discussing Prof. Jay's Small-Circle system with the head of Doce Pares Eskrima, GM Cacoy Canete. GM Canete is just a youngster when compared to Prof. Jay and Prof. Kufferath (Cacoy is only 71 :). Cacoy is also a Judo, Aikido, & Karate man. Keeping in mind that Eskrima is weapons based, he mentioned that Small Circle techniques worked well in unarmed situations, but that when a weapon was involved you wanted to use large circle techniques not small circle techniques. One of our students who is a green stripe hadn't yet broken a board. She was part of the demonstration on the Fourth of July. During our practice the wednesday before she wanted to try just the get this "I can't" block out of her mind. She tried twice and hadn't broken it and was ready to walk off. The instructor and I made her stay. The instructor told her where to focus placing her foot. I told her not only focus on that spot but through it to try to hit the board holders on the other side. This time she broke it. She had everyone in the room sign her broken board. LOL!! I thought that was kinda cute. I just put mine into the burn pile. What boards were broken over the 4th I took home and contributed to the bon-fire at my place. I do not waste trees. This was dead wood from fallen branches and limbs from my woods and from fence line clearing my neighbors do. I do not own a fireplace. I keep on fearing of chimney fires. Donna - -- NO!! We are currently working on something called ki bon soo. I've been trying to find additional information on the Internet about how the steps should be preformed. Does anybody out there have any idea where I can get additional information? Thanks Jeff ------------------------------ From: "KEVIN A. What exercises should I perform to help heal the muscle? Tim, Run (slowly, if need be), do not walk, to your doctor to get this checked out. This past June I wrote into the Dojang Digest about a problem I had with my right calf muscle. I thought it was a pulled muscle, however, it was actually a broken blood vessel(s). What felt like a very bad muscle pull was actually something called "Posterior Compartment Syndrome". If not treated, the patient may require surgery to fix the problem. Of course, I'm not saying you have what I did. I just want you and our brother/sister martial artists to be aware of this problem, especially if it feels just like a muscle pull. Basically, it couldn't hurt to just have a doctor look at it. If you do have a "Posterior Compartment Syndrome", the doctor will probably have you keep your leg elevated during your waking hours (take at least a week off from work if possible), ice behind the calf/ankle each hour for about 10 minutes, wrap the calf in an ace bandage (not tight), take ibuprofin for the swelling (you'll probably see swelling around the ankle/calf and plenty of discoloration), and skip martial arts training. It may take the better part of a month or so to get back slowly into training, that is, if you don't push things too hard. Hopefully, all you have is a muscle pull which heals with no complications. Just play it safe and get it looked at, especially if you see any swelling and/or discoloration. Best of luck! They're also great for door stops and paperweights. Smaller pieces are good for filling in ruts in your dirt road. Also, my GM has been know to take broken boards, glue them back together and use them again.
