It definitely sounds like the school is run solely to serve the ego and agenda of the instructor. In the end, Martial Arts should be a means to personal betterment. Fitness, self-defense skills, belt rankings are all positive by-products, but no one should have to put up with the pressure and risks apparent in this school. Look for a school where the welfare of the students is a top priority. And speaking from a senior's point of view (I'm 45) it's imperative that I am allowed to participate within my limitations. Sometimes that means I don't jump, sometimes it means I wait to test until next time. Pil Seung! For those of you who haven't seen them, don't pass up the chance if it comes your way. My girlfriend (not in MA) and my 18 year old daughter (no MA either) went with me and sat in stifling heat for 1 1/2 hours. (The venue was changed due to construction. We ended up in a middle school gym without a/c on a lovely 105 degree Kansas day.) My daughter actually picked up one of the broken boards and got it autographed by one of the women on the team, and this is the daughter that hasn't wanted anything to do with TKD. Kerry ------------------------------ From: "Kevin W. Tibbs" Date: Mon, 2 Aug 1999 10:57:35 -0700 (PDT) Subject: the_dojang: Proper protection for sparring Hello All, I've been training in TKD for about 14 months and started at the age of 34. My son has been training a little longer and started at the age of 6 (it is his involvement that finally pushed me into living out a childhood fantasy of studying a martial art 8-}.) About a week ago, I participated in my first "open" tournament (any martial art style allowed.) In the past, I've participated in only "inter-school" tournaments. The "inter-school" events are usually very friendly and the required protection equipment consists of headgear, mouthpiece, hand and feet padding, cup, and chestgear with option to wear shin and forearm padding. At the open, however, the competition is, shall we say, highly aggressive. Also the "open" required only headgear, mouthpiece, hand and feet padding, and cup. I have no problem with chestgear being optional for adults; however, most of the kids didn't wear chestgear. I witnessed a young girl take a pretty brutal side kick to the ribs and wondered whether her parents were being irresponsible by not insisting that she wear chest protection. Our Master Instructor requires that all representatives of our school wear chestgear, whether you are a child or adult. But let me ask all of you what you think of a mandatory chestgear requirement for all minors. Am I being an alarmist? Sincerely, Kevin W. Here's something exciting. It is a possibilty that tae-bo will bring more students to us not take em away. Those who want more than just a aerobics excersise. Donna - -- NO!! My cycle doesn't leak! Am I being an alarmist? A hogu is required for all those, minor or major :), sparring in USTU events. The same typically goes for class sparring, too.
