However, I was laughing when I saw the infomercial with the girl's testimony about "... I feel more confident walking around at night..." type of comment. No amount of this type of exercise is going to prepare you for combat. The aim of taebo and other exercise gimmicks is to make a grueling and difficult task "fun", "not boring", etc.. It is this very conflict, of conquering fear, boredom, pain, etc., that develops one's mental state to prepare them for combat. I would compare taebo to going to the arcade and playing the gun games and feeling really good and interpreting that as you are now experienced and ready for close quarter combat with people that actually shoot back. Nothing replaces hitting, getting hit, and executing technique on a live body. Taebo should not be mistaken for anything more than what it is, an exercise system. If you do, you are in for a rude awakening. ------------------------------ From: "A. Boyd" Date: Tue, 3 Aug 1999 18:54:27 -0700 (PDT) Subject: the_dojang: Typhoon Olga Well I was fortunate enough to have my vacation from last Wednesday to today (Wednesday). So, the reainy season which was declared finished (with no rain) began two days into my time off. Oddly enough, this is just like last year. ;} I live in Uijongbu and last year's flooding was tremendous. My place was just a few meters from one of the major centres of destruction in this city. This year I was fortunate enough to be able to move to higher ground. The destruction was much less than last year and the drainage systems had a much easier time disposing of all the water. Still, it's a good thing that Olga was in a hurry and passed us by without dumping the 15 inches of rain we were expecting to fall last night. Still, 4 days of steady rain followed by 2 days of heavy rain makes you want to buy a raft and paddle back to North America. I'm expecting to hear from my kwanjangnim today that my sword has been consumed by mildew and rust. === Anthony BT Boyd: Swordsman and English Teacher For illumination on this curious occupation please follow this link: http://victorian.fortunecity.com/operatic/739 ICQ#: 45348443 _____________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? My \ question is - can one learn enough (especially as a beginner) going \ twice a week as opposed to 3-4 times a week.? FWIW, I'm taking Hapkido twice a week, and a feel like I'm learning just fine :) OTOH, each class lasts 1 1/2 hours. In my opinion it's quality, not quantity. And you can improve the quality by taking responsibility for being a high quality student. Stay focused in class, ask questions, accept the lessons that are being taught. Also, teachers love students that strive to learn. If you make the effort to learn, your teacher will probably make the effort to teach accordingly. And, as I've experienced, you can learn plenty taking two classes a week. \ I am patient when it comes to \ testing for belts - but impatient when it comes to learning. Patience in all things, Grasshopper. ;) \ I know its hard to build anything \ at the gym going twice a week - is it the same in MA? Yes, if you could take class three times a week you would learn faster. But isn't the goal to learn? Does it matter how fast you learn as long as you are learning? Taking Hapkido twice a week will allow you to learn (and your teacher to teach) many things. You may not learn as fast as someone else who is taking more classes, or as fast as you would like, but you have ample opportunity to learn. You have been given an opportunity for a wonderful experience. Those of you who are unaware of the Taepoong Olga sitchie over here in Korea, let me tell you something... I have never seen so many tree branches on Yongsan. In fact, I'm (un)lucky enough to have this son of a submariner sitting RIGHT OVER my bedroom... so guess where I'm NOT sleeping tonight? Areas like Kyonggi-do (Munsan, Inchon) and Tongduchon and Uijongbu are still flooded. In fact, watching what I can of the news, some areas, esp. the footage of Munsan shows water everywhere. They had people in boats going to houses delivering packages of ramyon and stuff, and it showed the victims who lost their homes... don't understand most of what's being said, but it's hellacious. I'm NOT sleeping in my room tonight. I thought I was safe, but then again... I DID survive last night... hee hee hee... but I'm not pushing my karma. I don't want to wake up with branches in my face or worse, somewhere else not of this dimension. Bits of Yongsan are still not connected to sources of powre because trees are everywhere, and lines are down, but if some of you are living in Yongsan and are reading this, do me a favor please: TRY AND STAY AWAY FROM DRAGON HILL LODGE FROM LUNCH, OR IF YOU CAN'T RESIST, DON'T USE YOUR PLASTIC TO PAY FOR THE MEAL, USE CASH, PLEASE!!!!!!! I'm tired of having to go thru puddles of Visa, MC, and Amex receipts EVERY STINKING DAY. Has anyone, in the US only probably, seen that Mervyns commercial with David Douglas doing forms wearing various outfits from their back to school line? There were a bunch of others, but he was the only one I recognized. Has anyone noticed an increase in martial arts topics in mainstream media (meaning NOT martial arts films) in the last year or so? Meaning things like that Brisk ice tea commercial with Bruce Lee and the karate kid (Kid? I'm thirty-five!) or that new movie "Runaway Bride" where Julia Robert works out her anger by working kick-boxing combos on a heavy bag.
