Chris Mckenna GTF Scotland >> Hi Chris, most of the folks I know use sport tape to avoid the sore burning feeling on the ball of the foot and sometimes the big toe. True, when you get on the mat the tape makes you look lke the walking wounded, but prevents the blisters. I have tried wearing MA shoes, however, i stick to the mat and just don't find them comfortable. But then again, I am barefoot whenever possible. Take care of that "crater" and please avoid infection. Good luck. There is much to think about and it is not always what you see, but what you don't see. My son, age 8, is still negative. Julio is asthmatic. His breathing is much improved since beginning TKD. The instructors were made aware from the first day. He carries an inhaler and a medical letter to self-administer if needed. He was refused permission to leave the mat and use the medication when he complained of shortness of breath (was told told to keep running) and chest pain (was told you won't die). He is the type of child that does not want anyone to know or see him use medication. Abuse does not build self-confidence or self-esteem. TKD seemed the perfect sport for him, no smokey bowling alleys, and no grass and ragweed pollen on the ball field. Lorraine, Julio's Mom Garfield, NJ, USA >> Lorraine, Please don't give up on TKD and try very hard to keep Julio from giving up on it as well. All schools are not like the one you describe. In my son's school, there are three members of the Olympic-style sparring class who are asthmatic, including my son. As you may imagine, the class is very heavy on building cardio-vascular capacity and endurance. Even though the instructors want the members to work very, very hard in the class, any student may walk off the floor at any time for good cause. That cause may be to throw up (yes, happens occasionally), drink water, use an inhaler, whatever - most anything except a potty break (and I doubt there would be any big thing about that). When new students with asthma begin the sparring class, there is often a frequent requirement for the inhaler. As endurance and CV capacity are expanded, the requirement becomes less and less, but you never can tell when it may happen. I wouldn't stay at a school where the instructor(s) didn't care about my son's or any other student's medical needs. There are just too many good Taekwondo schools out there to stay at one that is less than suitable. Chris Mckenna GTF Scotland PS. I can tell everyone reading that pouring Methylated Spirits on a red-raw shiny new patch of skin in the hope that it is instantly toughened up is not ONLY a really stupid idea but that it is beyond agony! >:~( >> OOOWWWW!!!!!!! Chriss, My advice would be to remove your shoes and let them "air out" as long as possible before you start practicing. I tend to shed the "tough" skin on the balls of my foot too. However, when I air my feet out, or wear sandals to class my feet generally fair better. As a alternative, I find that the Dit Da Jow (located on the this groups server (the one with 11+ ingrediants) seems to nurse blisters and tender skin REALLy well.. good luck Stone ------------------------------ From: Tkdtiger@aol.com Date: Mon, 9 Aug 1999 19:16:25 EDT Subject: the_dojang: USTU Web Site As part of a number of changes to the USTU web site over the next few months, the Web Staff has added a new service to member schools and state organizations. Member schools with web sites that mention their USTU member status will get a free link on the USTU links page. Please email those addresses to ladytkd2@aol.com - along with which member state as I am lazy and don't want to type it out again for our administrator :) ps If you have any ideas for what you would like to see on the site - please let me know, at this or any of my various email addresses. Tentative Plan include sections on Coaching, For parents only, Women's Corner, History of the USTU...... and more....... But bear with us because this takes a lot of time and energy and money, so it will take some time.
