It's none of their business. It sounds as if someone in that organization is " a little too big for his britches (or dobok, as the case may be)"! Thanks for all of your letters to the digest. Cheers! My instructor, who holds ranks in TKD, Karate and Okinawan Karate, noticed that he would practice almost the same katas in both systems, but when he sparred he would meet very different type of fighters. For example, TKD people would be bouncing rapidly, hands down, while Karate people would be more stationary, hands up. After reading the TaekKyon article written by Robert Young in Journal of Asian Martial Arts, he finally found out one compelling reason why such a radical difference exists - TaekKyon is a fighting game, whose rules are eerily similar to the ones found in Capoeira, another popular fighting game. Also, since TaekKyon is a game, where one "wins" by knocking the opponents down by kicking them high around the shoulder levels or sweeping them, not a teaching system, one learned how to fight by going into the game. What this means is that sparring was learnt by doing full sparring from day one - unlike Boxe Francaise, which has many kinds of limited sparring to bring a novice gradually into full contact sparring. "Traditional" TKD may have approached the sparring from the same angle. Also, the kind of material that he practiced in the 70's had forms and combinations that looked like a silat form: aggressor steps in and punches/ defender drops to one knee, traps the foot of the aggressor with one hand, while simultaneously punching the groin with other hand. Another example is aggressor steps in with a punch/ defender does something (I forget exactly what, block maybe) and close in, then headlock followed by a violent wrench to break the neck - extremely power oriented. He also practiced cartwheels, which was part of the TKD curriculum as well. So I think that when people from that generation say "traditional TKD", they may be referring to: 1) katas that are almost identical to Karate katas 2) a lot more diverse in materials, much more self-defense and martial oriented 3) sparring that was much more TaekKyon rule oriented, rather than competitionn oriented. Or it could be simply be the classic example of old-timers saying how in the old days the training was much more violent and lethal and so forth :) >We do know what TaekKyon was/is like. It is nothing like Tangsudo or >Kongsudo, but does remind one, at least a little, of Olympic style TKD. So >- -I- might could go along with Traditional TKD is somewhat like TaekKyon is >something like new TKD.
