Therefore, TKD > (and all other martial arts) must be 4MM years old, right? The first martial arts weapon being described in the Bible, the jaw bone of an ass. (Different jaw bone than Master Hancock uses..;) It just so happens that I practice the oldest form of self defense known to man. Tuhallas. It's philosophy is "He who freaks and runs away, lives to cower another day." Tuhallas being an ancient african\caveman word meaning "to haul ass".... ------------------------------ From: Ray Terry Date: Mon, 16 Aug 1999 20:07:20 -0700 (PDT) Subject: Re: the_dojang:Re: Indomitable Spiritu > All I need is the hangul for Indomitable Spirit (preferably in electronic > format, if at all possible). What does it matter if a tradition is 10 minutes or 10,000 years old. If I start a new dojang tomorrow and decide to invent some new traditions, and call it Chris's New and Improved Traditional Taekwondo School, who has the right to deny what I decide is a tradition or not. On the other hand calling it Traditional might just be a way to differentiate it from other TKD(MM) schools, that might be more sport(competition) orientated, rather than focusing on the 'Martial' side of defending one's life. But like the 'My art is better than yours' debate, surly the term traditional is subjective and will mean something different to every ART proclaiming it in the title. Interesting, the definition was cited but appeared to be subsequently ignored;>) "...from generation to generation..." implies at least 2, and probably 3 or more generations: at 20 years each, that's 40-60 years of a virtually unchanged m.a. system to minimally qualify as having "tradition". I'll take it on faith that the main definition of "traditional" is "having tradition" (don't laugh, sometimes a bit of "wiggle room" creeps in when a word changes form;>). So it would appear that we are approaching, but only approaching, a cusp where some modern Korean m.a. could be said to be traditional, assuming any of those systems are substantially the same as at their inception. === Tang Soo! I wouldn't be a bit surprised if the Kansas Board of Education tried to ban references to martial arts because of some "evil eastern influence". I had some very conservatively religious relatives that were extremely upset for that very reason when I studied TKD 25 years ago. :\ (shrug) Kerry WTF DanBo Wichita, KS ------------------------------ From: Greg Giddins Date: Tue, 17 Aug 1999 09:25:55 -0600 Subject: the_dojang: Schools in the Rockies?
