I will soon be administering a third email distribution list. This will be an email list for the Police Martial Arts Association (PMAA). As one might guess, it will be the pmaa-digest. Not sure yet if membership will only be open to LEOs, or only open to members of the PMAA, or exactly what... But I will keep you all informed, whatever the situation. Not to worry, the_dojang and the eskrima-digest will continue on as in the past, i.e. being the BEST lists going because of your active participation. To me, that's alittle steep. $ 100 to $ 200 might be ok. Where does all the "extra" go towards? Salaries? Just a couple of questions in case I decide to open a school... >> Yes, I believe that is a bit steep ... but there is no ceiling on that anywhere and anyone can charge what they want. Generally the black belts that show up to grade the test get paid a fee for coming ... and they go out to lunch or dinner (the owner of the school normally picks up the tab for that too). A good new uniform (does it have patches and embroidery on it?) can cost a pretty penny (but remember, the owner is getting it wholesale) and it depends on how much the organization charges for the certificate that the owner has to send away for, too. Our Dan tests are lower than anyone else's ($100) (I pick up the lunch fee but everyone donates there time to come up and grade the test as we do this for each other's tests all the time) ... but I don't award anyone a new uniform. Just a black belt and a certificate. They want more ... they have to pay more. Hi Ray, My name is Mark Schuijt and I am a Taekwondo student in The Netherlands. I am rather new to this digest for I have received only one edition now, but I would like to respond anyway. I am doing Taekwondo for almost eight years now, as well as instructing as sparring and I am going for my second Dan in a few weeks. When I read your story it reminded me a lot of a similar situation I had. In Holland we have two unions. The TBN, which stands for Taekwondo Bond Nederland (that is for those of you who don't know Dutch: Taekwondo Union Holland). It is a member of the WTF and spars ofcourse accordingly. Then there is the ITF. At first we were a member with the TBN. I trained hard and obtained my black belt three years later. But roundabout 3 years ago, the Union changed it's forms from Tuls to Taegeuks for unity with the WTF. We learned them to as far as Koryo, but it wasn't for us. We changed Union with the entire school to the ITF where they still performed Tuls, in a slighty different manner, but hey you can't have everything and they walk great. The only thing was that with changing from Union we had to change from sparring style. We used to do full-contact, which is like you know for about 80% kicks and almost no points for punches. The ITF on the contrary is (according to me) somewhat more complete as the punching comes in big time. So from one day to another I had to change my way of fighting in the ring. It took me a while to be able to sparr in this style in a decent manner. But now I beleive I am a much more complete fighter. As you I am 6'3" but I weight only roundabout 160# and the trick I used to become a more proficient fighter with my hands, because I beleive that that's the problem with you, is that I just started sparring with no kicks for a while. The key to winning from Karate people or from people in semi-contact (ITF) is for us long people to start using the reach of your arms. You will be amazed on how you can turn a fight into your advantage by even a simple thing as just streching your arm forwardly. Learn to jab more and by creating more distance between you and your opponent you will be able to develop other punches better too AND you will be able to use your kicks again. As I train some Karate now and then too (remember to keep an open mind to all martial arts) I found out that once you get a feeling for that punching (and blocking of those puches ofcourse), you can use your wide variety of kicks on those people. To conclude, in order for me to adopt to the ITF style (that is more and faster punches, and a point tournament system) I learned to use the lenght of my arms and raised my defense. As for the speed, I think once you get more into the punching and fighting more your fight instead of theirs, you will come around pretty fast. I hope you can use some of this, all I can tell you is that it worked for me! AOL seems to have some preset limit as to how large an email can be before it requires you to do a download before reading with your favorite word processor. AOL's limit seems to be 20 or 25 or 30K, somewhere in there.?. Other ISPs don't seem to have such a limit. So, when a large issue of the digest is sent out (exceeding the aforementioned limit), AOL users will have to download and read using whatever word processor you'd typically use. That or ask AOL to raise their limit to 30K or 35K.
