Chris asked: What are Saraubis? It is a mechanical "robot" with target zones for you to punch and kick. It has a computer that measures speed, power and reflexes. It has 3 levels of difficulty. It has a solid metal support frame, so if you hit the non-padded areas, you can get hurt. One person was holding the top of the board with two fingers, his arm extended straight out to the side. The testee's kick was so fast and so precise that it took the bottom of the board clean off, leaving the top of the board hanging from the holder's fingers. IMHO speed and precision are more impressive than power. [ You can get a strong (STRONG) holder and have him/her hold up a concrete slab by one edge in exactly this same suspended manner (obviously not two finger!) and you can break it (we call the kick spinning back kick). Use/hit only your heel and straighten your whole leg just before or at the impact. You must go through with your hip. Very impressive. It only resorts to a game of tag if the competitors and judges allow it to become so. Most good judges will only call good, solid contact. Some however won't. I say don't train for the later. Here are some responses to Mac. (I have snipped some but do not think I've taken anything out of context.) > Now > some people trying to go fast and get the point can tend to use > more than light > or moderate contact ;-) Not me of course.... I would say that your better fighters "tend to use more than light or moderate conatct" because they know it's not a game of tag. I have seen people get "tagged" and feel it the next day. > So it's all speed. It's all distance and timing (as in any fight). > The easiest to score with (and judges to see) is a leading diving in backfist. Great place for a defensive sidekick. It's easy for the judges to see the person dive in and get stopped in there tracks. It also makes the person think twice the next time he/she decides to do it. > They don't worry too much about defense or getting creamed, I they don't worry about defense they will lose against a good fighter. > You'd never fight like that in real life, where > they might get a dinky backfist etc. in on you, but your power > technique would > knock them down/out. I you won't fight like that in real life don't fight like that in the ring. You don't have to throw a "dinky backfist". Throw a good ol' 1-2 punch. Whenever I fight I always try to land while being untouchable (the goal of point sparring). If can kick and punch you and you can even touch me, I think I'll be just fine. > Only use > rear leg or hand when the opponent has been set up for it or in a > defensive > manner. > Otherwise, it's too slow and they can see it coming. How is this so different from "real" fighting. I really don't lead with any backleg kicks without setting it up. As for strategy... I say just do what your good at and apply it to the situation. If you are a kicker, keep your distance (so you won't get hit with "a dinky backfist"). If your opponent tries to step in, nail them with a sidekick. Setup your kicks with your footwork and hands. Odds are just throwing one kick won't land. If you a puncher, keep your distance and move (footwork). You don't want to just stand there in your opponents kicking range. Setup your hands with your footwork and kicks. Defense is the key. Not blocking and countering, but MOVING and countering. Be untouchable. (Just like any fighting). Julie, I'm not sure if this will help or not... Do you do breaking while executing forms? Once we hit 5th (I think) Kup we are required to do breaks in the Tae Geuk forms. For my 1st Kup test I did breaking in one of our In Young Ryu (sparring) forms. I opened with a Palm thrust (breaking a 1x10) followed by a side kick (breaking a 2x10) a few more moves in the form then a middle punch (breaking a 2x10) then completed the form, the final movements being a turn to position me to step backwards 1 step to exactly where I started while performing a double hammer fist (each breaking a 2x10). Unfortunately I only broke one of the boards on the final move but was allowed to redo the final move to complete the breaking. I'm not sure this helps but hopefully it gives you an idea or two. jd Jim Donley 1st Kup Secretary USA Tae Kwon Do Black Belt Center Evanston, IL www.enteract.com/~jrdonley/tkd/index.html "Accept the challenges so that you may feel the exhilaration of victory." --George S.
